rif. 736717 November 1832; Southam House. 12mo bifolium. Ellenborough's letter 15 lines of text occupies the first leaf; with the pencil draft of Gough's reply also 15 lines with additions and deletions on the recto of the second leaf. Very good with traces of grey paper mount adhering in a thin strip to the reverse of the second leaf. Ellenborough will 'afford' Nichols 'every facility for the making of tracings from the Tiles at Southam'. If Nichols will let him know when he is coming he will 'make it a point to be here'. Suggests that Nichols might come 'after Church about 2 o'clock on Sunday next'. In reply Nichols says he will do himself 'the honour of calling at the hour you name'. Asks Ellenborough to 'give directions to drain & dry' the tiles as they 'have probably become very wet during the last two days' and makes another request relating to them. 17 November 1832; Southam House. unknown

rif. 21634Studley Royal Ripon 25 August 1886. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches vertical folds in good condition. Marked Private. George Frederick Samuel Robinson first Marquess of Ripon 1827-1909 Liberal statesman. Ripon was Viceroy of India 1880-1884. As regards Burma I share your disquietude as to the state of things there. I always entertained the strongest conviction that the annexation of Upper Burma would prove a much more difficult & a far less profitable undertaking than its eager advocates seemed to suppose - but on the other hand I doubt the possibility now of restoring what has been destroyed & I am afraid that we must pay the penalty of Lord R Churchills rash policy. I agree very much with you in the belief that these things will not be stopped until the cost of them is practically brought home to the British taxpayer. unknown
rif. 12582On letterhead of the India Office Whitehall. 24 October 1912. 1p. 12mo. Good on lightly-aged paper. Tipped in onto a leaf removed from an album. Holderness's predecessor Sir Richmond Ritchie 1854-1912 had died ten days before the writing of the letter as a result according to the Oxford DNB of the undermining of his health by 'unremitting hard work . over several years'. Holderness begins the letter: 'It is very good of you to congratulate me on succeeding to poor Ritchie's responsibilities. I wish from the bottom of my heart that the circumstance had not arisen.' His shadow haunts the room.' He concludes with an invitation to Havelock-Allan to visit him 'whenever the spirit moves you'. On letterhead of the India Office, Whitehall. 24 October [1912]. unknown
rif. 12200On embossed Admiralty letterhead. 1883. 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In pencil. Lightly-aged and worn. In pencil with deletions and emendations. Docketed in another hand on reverse of second leaf: 'MS. speech delivered at Guildhall Banquet by Lord Northbrook First Lord of Admiralty - 9th Novr. 1883.' And with the following in the second hand at the head of the first page: 'Lord Northbrook's Speech - Nov. 9. 1883 at Guildhall'. A very short speech well reported in The Times of 10 November 1883. Among the emendations is an alteration to the conclusion of the speech with the phrase 'any duty which they may be called upon to undertake' replaced by 'in their several stations all the arduous & responsible duties of their noble profession'. On embossed Admiralty letterhead. [1883.] unknown
rif. 22983Camp 4 miles West of 6 October 1799. 1 page 9 x 7 inches left margin a little ragged where integral leaf removed but in clean sound condition. Letters from the Indian Campaigns of Arthur Wellesley first Duke of Wellington 1769-1852 are uncommon. William Harness 1762-1804 an infantry officer had arrived in India in 1796 and was gazetted to a lieutenant-colonelcy with the 74th Regiment in 1799. It was in India that Wellington acquired his phenomenal mastery of the details of regimental duty. His string of successes included the conquests of Mysore Tanjore and Surat. Tippu was killed in the fortress of Seringapatam in April 1799. Colonel Arthur Wellesley remained in command of the military force quartered in Mysore. He was also responsible for the civil administration. Until September 1799 Wellesley was in pursuit of a freebooter called Dhoondiah and his followers who were defeated at Conahgull 10 September. unknown
