First edition; small 4to 24.5 x 19 cm; modern quarter red morocco gilt rolled red cloth boards spine lettered in gilt all edges speckled red a fine copy; ii 83 vi pp. An important letter appealing to the East India Company in regards to the controversy surrounding the arrest of George Pigot 1719-1777 Governor of Madras in 1776. As soon as Pigot arrived in Madras he was at odds with the the majority of his council members. This resulted in a legal wrangle where Pigot tried to reinstate the lands of the Rajah of Tanjore without approval. He refused to sign documents in several highly strung meetings and was eventually arrested by Brigadier-General James Stuart as ordered of a majority of the council and died in captivity in 1777. This pamphlet was written by James Stuart's brother as a defence of his actions for which he would eventually be pardoned in a court martial in 1780. Pickett 1137. [London], 1778. hardcover

1994199 pages. Signed by all three authors upon title page. An exciting account of two women who were in India the day it gained its independence from Great Britain. Over ten million people were displaced as the result of India being divided into two nations, New India and Pakistan. Ada and Ida saw the results of the fighitng and riots that followed and did what they could to follow the example of the Good Samaritan. They "anointed and bound up wounds and offered assistance." The "twins" as they are known, worked in refugee camps. They distributed tons of clothing and food. They rode into the Himalayan Mountains, where no white woman, much less blond identical twins, had ever been seen, to deliver clothing to people who had their homes and possessions burned or stolen by raiders. For three years, Ada and Ida truly gave "a little bit of love." This story will be of special interest to the thousands of women and men who, during the 1940s, donated clothing and money and worked with their church sewing circles and the packing centers to prepare and ship the items Ada and Ida were privileged to hand out to the refugees. Author has always felt close to "the twins" because on the day she was born, Ada entered her life as nurse for her and her mother. Former owner's name atop title page. Text insterspersed with dozens of interesting black and white photos. Moderate wear overall. Illustrated covers remain bright and glossy. Book
