On the first leaf of a bifolium the recto of the second leaf being addressed by him to ‘Countess of Jersey / &c &c &c’. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. Written in high eighteenth-century style. Begins: ‘Madam / If you have receiv’d the slightest amusement from my imperfect composition I am most highly gratified and feel myself very sensibly flatter’d by the honor you confer upon me by your condescending to regret the loss which I have infinitely ye most reason to lament.’ He wishes her ‘every possible enjoyment’ of her ‘health and happiness in all your branches’ till he has ‘ye honor of paying you and Lord Jersey my respects in town’. He will ‘not fail to remember any commands you lay upon me’. The valediction with ornate signature reads: ‘I have ye honor to be / Madam / Your Ladyship’s most / obedt & obligd hum. Servt / Richd Cumberland’. There is a crude pencil portrait of a man’s face - perhaps Cumberland’s and perhaps drawn by the Countess - at the bottom right of the recto of the second leaf. Inscribed by Captain Frank Shaw. Index of ships. The records of 135 ocean tankers of the Standard Oil Company New Jersey and the Panama Transport Company. This is the standard reference for people who want to learn more about Merchant Marine T-2 type tankers and the lives they led during WWII. The Standard Oil Company of New Jersey operated scores of oil tankers during World War II delivering the vital fuels and lubricants to the fighting fronts and combat ships all over the world. Many of their ships were lost to enemy action. After World War II Esso wrote a history of all their ships and the men who sailed them. "Ships of the Esso Fleet in World War II" provides a great history of the company during those vital years. Detailed histories of each ship are provided. A letter from the General Manager of Esso M.G. Gamble to the Marine Department and Shore Personnel was supplied with copies of the book when they were originally distributed to employees. The letter reads: "The management is pleased to present you with a copy of the book "Ships of the Esso Fleet in World War II." We feel that the entire shore staff through its close association with and fine cooperation in the operation of the Company's tankers will be interested in having this practical record of the war service of our ships and the officers and men who sailed them." ref. 10915'Riemore' Yewstock Crescent West Chippenham Wilts. 11 May 1942. Two pages grubby but text clear and complete with obscure stamp information about acknowledgment. The order from the Paper Control forbidding the publication of the Channel Islands Review is a real hardship to Refugee Islanders also to some of the 9000 serving soldiers and seamen many of whom have wives children and relatives in the occupied islands. As the Review was only supplied on order and copies were passed on to friends the quantity of paper used must have been very small. We British underlined Channel Islanders feel it most unfair that Foreign papers are still published whilst ours in prohibited."
