An interesting letter involving the sale of slaves in early-19th-century New Jersey. The letter comes from a slaveowner named John Neagie writing to Garrabrandt Van Houten Esquire in Patterson New Jersey in 1814. The text of the letter reads in full: "Dear Sir I am willing to part with my three blacks lately in Jersey for three hundred and seventy five dollars for a term of years in such way as not to interfere with the laws concerning selling slaves from one state into the other provided you can get notes which you would be willing to take on. Same on Van Houten's mortgage. Dated June 20th 1814. Yours with respect John Neagie." Neagie's concerns about "selling slaves from one state into the other" seems to indicate that he is based somewhere outside New Jersey where his slaves have been "lately." In fact he has crossed out the word "now" and replaced it with "lately. June 28 unknown books

A substantial group of issues of an important lesbian newsletter published by the Lesbian Feminist Collective in New Jersey. According to the opening section of the first issue "the Express was formulated to bring the ideas and creativity of Lesbian Women to the largest possible number of readers." As defined succinctly by the subscription advertisement in an early issue The Lavender Express contains "Poetry Prose News Reviews and Events." The journal apparently ran for about twenty years from 1978 to 1998. The present group contains an ample number of the earliest issues. The first dozen issues are stamped "STORE COPY" on the front wrapper with no further identifying information; these perhaps belonged to one of the publication's commercial advertisers. OCLC reports a smattering of holdings. The present group include the very first issue along with most of the issues for 1979 through 1981 with a complete run for the latter year. The issues present here are as follows: Vol. 1 Nos. 1 April 1978 and 3 August 1978; Vol. 2 Nos. 1 January 1979 2 February 1979 3 March 1979 5 May 1979 6 June 1979 7 July 1979 8 August 1979 10 October 1979 and 12 December 1979; Vol. 3 Nos. 3 March 1980 5 May 1980 6 mis-identified as number 5 June 1980; 7 July 1980 8 August 1980 9 September 1980 10 October 1980 and 12 December 1980; Vol. 4 Nos. 1 January 1981 2 February 1981 3 March 1981 4 April 1981 5 May 1981 6 June 1981 7 July 1981 8 August 1981 9 September 1981 10 October 1981 11 November 1981 and 12 December 1981; Vol. 5 Nos. 1 January 1982 2 February 1982 and 3 March 1982. unknown books

A very good copy. $950. First edition. Main text in French. Text of the decree enacting the code in English. Located between the northern coast of France and the southern coast of England Jersey was originally part of Brittany. The island was eventually annexed to the Duchy of Normandy. When William the Conqueror conquered England in 1066 the duchy became part of his new kingdom. Jersey continued to be governed by a system derived from Norman customary law which was recorded in manuscript compilations. Over time this body of law became unwieldy and ineffective. Political events especially a protest in 1769 over the cost of wheat induced the Crown to reform Jersey's law and government. One of these reforms was the 1771 Code. The first printed collection of Jersey's laws it restated the island's law and legal procedures defined its legal and constitutional authority and clarified its relationship with the Crown. A second edition was published in 1860. As Jersey law firm Bedell Cristin notes in its history of the island's law "The legislative precedent set by the Code remains pertinent to this day." The Revision of 1877 satisfied an 1871 act of the Legislature to "revise simplify arrange and consolidate" all the general and permanent public statutes of New Jersey." It is valuable today chiefly as a tool for tracing the history of legislation. As Axel-Lute observes in his introduction "there are nearly seven hundred current sections in New Jersey Statutes Annotated for which the oldest source cited in the historical note is the Revision of 1877. To trace these sections back to earlier sources the researcher must use marginal notes and enactment date information in the 1877 work" iii. In addition to his informative introduction Axel-Lute has added a detailed table of contents a feature that wasn't included in the original work. unknown books
