2003As New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 204 p. Ills. One of most recent initiatives of the History Foundation in the field of history education, namely "Improvement of the Balkan History Textbooks Project", was completed in September 2002. This eight-month pilot project was supported by UNESCO, the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Turkey. The planning meeting in Istanbul (June 17th-18th,2001) was followed by a workshop in Pamporovo (September 8th-9th, 2001) and a conference in Istanbul (November 30th-December 2nd,2001), with the participation of teams from Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Romania and Turkey. The project aimed to bring together academics and history teachers from the Balkan countries; to review primary and -particulary- secondary level history textbooks currently in use; and to propose alternative ways of reflecting the political, social and cultural history of these countries. The main objective of the project was to prepare a final report on the history textbooks and the teaching of history in the five Balkan countries. Sine history education is in a 'transition period' in each of the five Balkan countries, this book at hand, which is the final report of the project should be considered as a 'snap shot' of the current state of the history education in the Balkans.

DJ is price-clipped. ; 1.06 x 8.75 x 5.69 Inches; 480 pages; This book is about much more than `the glory that was Greece'. In this fresh appraisal, replacing the original Legacy of Greece edited by Sir Richard Livingstone in 1921, fourteen distinguished contributors, all specialists in their field, describe a particular aspect of Greek culture, and then assess what later generations have made of this valuable inheritance. The result is a lucid and succinct introduction to how the ancient Greeks lived and thought, and to their influence on the world we know today. The wide range of topics covered includes politics, literature, history, education, philosophy, science, myth, and art and architecture.

1990Creasing to spine and front wrap. Scholar's initial to inner cover (Jenifer Neils). Pen markings to a few pages with notes in ink to rear endpapers. ; 0.75 x 8.75 x 5.75 Inches; 376 pages; Garland's book is a survey of the major life experiences which constituted the social reality of classical Greece. The method of analysis is dense description assembled mostly from classical literary and philosophic sources and broken down into the general topics of conception and pregnancy, birth, childhood, coming of age, early adulthood, and elders and the elderly. What emerges is a conception of the human being as a social animal par excellence whose nature was largely realized in the attainment of paradigmatic social roles: military service for men and childbearing for women. Among the subtopics are Greek medical ideas, the roles of women and children, marriage, care of the elderly, and the role of religious ideas.
