2004Light shelfwear to book. Pencilling to a few pages. Red pen correction to 1 page. Spine very slightly slanted. DJ is rubbed with minor shelfwear and creasing with 1 small tear. ; A considerable number of academic and popular studies on ancient sports have been, and are due to be, published in this Athenian Olympic year (throwing the opening statement of this book into some doubt: `Ancient Greek athletics as a field of study does not suffer from overpopulation') but this study stands out among the best. Miller draws on recent archaeological and historical discoveries to discuss in comprehensive detail all aspects of games and athletic competitions in ancient Greece. Throughout Miller places athletics in its social context because, as he argues, sport was one of the ways in which Greeks could aspire to their cultural ideal, to be civilised men. Supported by numerous photographs, often in colour, and illustrations of sites and objects that depict competitions, the scholarly text describes in fascinating detail the origin of athletics, the Olympic Games and other festivals, the role of women in this male domain, the relationship between an athlete and a hero, Greek recreation, the gymnasium, sport as entertainment, professional athletes and the political side to competitions. Includes a glossary. ; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; 288 pages

1963The setting is the Greek island of Rhodes, to which Dorcas Brandt flees in hope of escaping the strange incidents that have beset her since the death of her husband, Gino, in an airplane crash. She suspects that those who worked with Gino in his mysterious and illicit art dealings believe her to possess some knowledge which they must acquire at all costs. In Rhodes, with its ancient Greek ruins and medieval fortresses, Dorcas feels that she and her small daughter will surely find safety. Her hopes are frustrated, for on the island singular happenings dog her steps. The strange woman who comes to care for the child watches Dorcas with hostile eyes. Marks of warning are scrawled on a balcony. The symbol of an owl surprises her in circumstances that terrify. The promise of new love is threatened. As imminent danger to the little girl becomes apparent, Dorcas's very sanity seems to hang in the balance. On the acropolis of Lindos, where sheer cliffs plunge to the Aegean, the unknown comes into the open, and the forces of good and evil are meshed in final dramatic struggle.Fine except for remainder maek Book
1967When the Athenians took the island of Sphacteria, there was one among the Spartans, a youth name Ariston, who would not surrender, who thrust out his sword and made a desperate, suicidal charge. But Ariston was fated to live- he was saved by a blow from Orchomenus, the Spartan soldier who loved and hated him too much to let him die. He came to Athens a slave, a prostitute whose favors were sold by Polyxenus, the bathhouse keeper. In time, although not a citizen, he was to become one of the most powerful men in his adopted city, the friend and patron of Sokrates and Eurepides, the embodiment of all that was finest in the Athenian spirit. But always Ariston lived in the shadow of a black day in Sparta when, because of him, a beautiful young girl was hideously slaughtered- again and again suffering and death came close to those he loved. 2002br.
