2001réf. 39275University of Michigan Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Hardcover. Very light edgewear to DJ with 1 tiny chip.; 320 pages; Situated on the southwest coast of modern Turkey Miletos stood for centuries as one of the paramount cities in the Hellenic world a gateway between the East and West. It became especially famous as the most prolific mother city in Greek history sending out at least forty-five known primary and secondary settlements into the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea while at home developing into an intellectual and artistic center and one of the birthplaces of Western science and philosophy. A history of Miletos is long overdue. Despite the significance of this city in antiquity and the important results of ongoing excavations there the last full-scale discussion of Miletos was written in 1915. In Miletos the Ornament of Ionia Vanessa B. Gorman provides the first and only modern integrated history of the city collecting and scrutinizing sources about Miletos for the period stretching from the first signs of habitation until 400 B. C. E. This book reviews the archaeological evidence for the physical city demonstrates the likelihood of both Minoan and Mycenaean settlements there and substantiates the fact of the Persian destruction and refoundation of Miletos along orthogonal lines. With insight and diligence Gorman surveys the cults known to have existed during this period; traces the political progress of the city through monarchy oligarchy tyranny and democracy; and sketches the terms of its subjugation under the Persians and later the Athenians. Providing a detailed and up-to-date account of the development of one of the major urban centers of Asia Minor Gorman's book will engage classicists historians and Near Eastern specialists. . 2001. 047211199X . C. rather than focusing on the traditional question of how accurate they are as histories. Through the analysis of the complete corpus of Xenophon's work and the writings of his contemporaries Xenophon is shown to be very much a man of his times concerned with topical issues ranging from panhellenism and utopia to how far the gods controlled human history. . 1995. 041509139X . 1997réf. 39291Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. Hardcover. Very minor shelfwear to book. DJ has tear to front panel and minor edgewear.; 345 pages; It is a commonplace of modern scholarship that the Athenians hated and despised the Persians but the claims of contempt are disproved by the evidence of archaeology epigraphy iconography and literature all of which reveal some facet of Athenian receptivity to Achaemenid Persian culture. The Athenian response was as richly complex as the spheres of interaction: both private and public elite and sub-elite. It appears in pot shapes clothing luxurious display and monumental architecture. This innovative study the first comprehensive collection of evidence pertaining to the relations between Athens and Persia in the fifth century BC aims to make this evidence better known and in so doing to argue that the social culture of classical Athens was not the monolithic construct it might appear . 1997. 0521495989 . Very light shelfwear to book and DJ.; 0.8 x 9.36 x 6.38 Inches; 220 pages; Tales of archaic Greek city foundations continue to be told and retold long after the colonies themselves were settled and this book explores how the ancient Greeks constructed their memory of founding new cities overseas. Greek stories about colonizing Sicily or the Black Sea in the seventh century B.C.E. are no more transparent no less culturally constructed than nineteenth-century British tales of empire in India or Africa; they are every bit as much about power language and cultural appropriation. This book brings anthropological and literary theory to bear on the narratives that later Greeks tell about founding colonies and the processes through which the colonized are assimilated into the familiar story-lines metaphors and rituals of the colonizers. The distinctiveness and the universality of the Greek colonial representations are explored through explicit comparison with later European narratives of new world settlement. . 1993. 0195083997 .
