Light edgewear to DJ.; 345 pages; It is a commonplace of modern scholarship that the Athenians hated and despised the Persians but the claims of contempt are disproved by the evidence of archaeology epigraphy iconography and literature all of which reveal some facet of Athenian receptivity to Achaemenid Persian culture. The Athenian response was as richly complex as the spheres of interaction: both private and public elite and sub-elite. It appears in pot shapes clothing luxurious display and monumental architecture. This innovative study the first comprehensive collection of evidence pertaining to the relations between Athens and Persia in the fifth century BC aims to make this evidence better known and in so doing to argue that the social culture of classical Athens was not the monolithic construct it might appear . 1997. 0521495989 . DJ flap creased.; 1.25 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 324 pages; From household gossip to public beatings this social history explores the many channels through which Athenians maintained public order. Virginia Hunter draws mostly on Attic court proceedings which allowed for a wide range of evidence including common rumors about a defendant's character and testimony obtained under torture of slaves against their masters. She describes Athenian "policing" as a form of social control that took place across a range of private and public levels. Not only does policing appear to have been a collective enterprise but its methods were embedded in a variety of social institutions resulting in the blurring of the line between state and society. Hunter's inquiry into topics such as household authority disputes among kin the presence of slaves in the house gossip in the home and neighborhood and forms of public punishment reveals a continuum extending from self-regulation among kin to punitive actions enforced by the state. Recognizing the bias of legal documents toward the wealthy Hunter concentrates on exposing the voices of the less powerful and less privileged members of society including women and slaves. In so doing she is among the first to address systematically such important issues as the authority of women self-help and corporal punishment. . 1993. 0691032688 . Light edgewear and faint creasing to DJ.; Hellenistic Culture and Society; 545 pages; Alexander the Great changed the face of the ancient world. During his life and after his death his image in works of art exerted an unprecedented influence on marbles bronzes ivories frescoes mosaics coins medals even painted pottery and relief ware. Alexander's physiognomy became the most famous in history. But can we really know what meaning lies behind these images Andrew Stewart demonstrates that these portraits wildly divergent in character quality type provenance date and purpose actually transmit not so much a likeness of Alexander as a set of carefully crafted cliches that mobilize the notion "Alexander" for diverse ends and diverse audiences. Stewart discusses the portraits as studies in power and his original interpretation of them gives unprecedented fullness and shape to the idea and image called "Alexander." . 1994. 0520068513 . DJ spine a bit sunned.; 259 pages; The enigmatic three-mile-long Dema wall in the countryside outside ancient Athens has perplexed archaeologists and historians for decades. When was it built and what role did it play in Greek military history In a tour de force of archaeological and historical argument Mark H. Munn establishes the place of the Dema wall in the defense of Athens and offers a completely new perspective on the Boiotian War. Since no ancient reference to the wall survives scholars have contested the date and purpose of the wall's construction placing it anywhere between the Geometric Age and Hellenistic eras. While directing the excavation of a watchtower above the wall Munn's chance discovery of a datable sherd in the wall's remains fixed the date of the wall's construction at 378 B. C. the onset of the three-year Boiotian War. Munn offers an absorbing narrative account of the war and his descriptions and effective use of literary extracts render a vivid portrayal of the opposing generals military tactics and battle scenes. . 1993. 0520076850 . Light shelfwear.; Skrifter Utgivna Av Svenska Institutet I Athen / Acta Instituti Atheniensis Regni Sueciae Series in 4° XXXVIII; 303 pages; The purpose of the Fifth International Symposium at the Swedish Institute at Athens the papers and discussions of which are contained in this volume was to initiate a discussion of the various phenomena characteristic of Greek cult practice of the pre-Hellenistic periods ranging from sacrifice and libations to the handling of cult images and the placing of votive gifts in a sanctuary. It was planned as a cross-discipline symposium so as to allow the problems to be addressed by scholars from diverging points of view by diverse methods and on the basis of the available evidence be it archaeological architectural iconographical literary or epigraphical. We also invited an anthropologist Professor W. Arens of the State University of New York at Stony Brook in order to put Greek cult practice in the more general perspective of cultural anthropology. These efforts notwithstanding it proved impossible to even touch upon all relevant aspects of the topic within the limited time of three days of sessions and a one day field-trip. The result was a concentration of papers and discussions on a few central phenomena such as animal sacrifice votive offerings and ritual meals and a number of single contributions dealing with a wide range of other aspects. It is our hope that the proceedings will inspire further research in this fascinating field. Robin Hägg . 1988. 9185086975 . Paul Aströms Förlag paperback
