2006Nikitas Kaklamanis in the pages of his book presents his vision for an Athens established as the Eternal Cultural Capital, which will emerge only with the cooperation of the Greek citizen. "Culture as the art of living in the city can only be the main concern of the citizens of a metropolis. Athens is the metropolis that can incomparably combine the ancient cultural tradition with the modern cultural creation on a global scale. Culture is The means and means of all policies to contribute to the harmonious coexistence of society as a whole and the goal of all together with the policies for the prosperity of the city, the municipality. "In our current living conditions, the need arises for the city to meet politics and culture in an inseparable triptych. That is why politics for the city must, especially in Athens, focus on culture." 117p. [3 copies found in WorldCat] Book

2014The essays in Ruin link meditations on teaching, friendship, motherhood, love, the financial meltdown in Greece, the shared language of politics and advertising, Occupy Wall Street, and the Parthenon Marbles into a relentless interrogation of identity and loss. Kalfopoulou's Athens and New York are twinned sites of perpetual dislocation, palimpsests of political, economic, cultural-and personal-crisis. The refugee, the immigrant, the fragmented 'I' charted in these essays-all are studies in exilic living, pilgrims wandering the wreckage of late capitalism.179p. bibliography Book

DJ some a bit of creasing with DJ spine a bit wavy.; 1.13 x 9.38 x 6.3 Inches; 362 pages; Wealth and power are themes that preoccupy much of Greek literature from Homer on and this book unravels the significance of these subjects in one of the most famous pieces of narrative writing from classical antiquity. Lisa Kallet brilliantly reshapes our literary and historical understanding of Thucydides' account of the disastrous Sicilian expedition of 415Ð413 b.c. a pivotal event in the Peloponnesian War. She shows that the second half of Thucydides' History contains a damning critique of Athens and its leaders for becoming corrupted by money and for failing to appropriately use their financial strength on military power. Focusing especially on the narrative techniques Thucydides used to build his argument Kallet gives a close examination of the subjects of wealth and power in this account of naval war and its aftermath and locates Thucydides' writings on these themes within a broad intellectual context. Among other topics Kallet discusses Thucydides' use of metaphor his numerous intertextual references to Herodotus and Homer and thematic links he makes among the topics of money emotion and sight. Overall she shows that the subject of money constitutes a continuous thematic thread in books six through eight of the History. In addition this book takes a fresh look at familiar epigraphic evidence. Kallet's ability to combine sophisticated literary analysis with a firm grasp of Attic inscriptions sheds new light on an important work of antiquity and provides a model example of how to unravel a dense historical text to reveal its underlying literary principles of construction.; Signed by Author . 2002. 0520229843 .
