"George Psychoundakis was a twenty-one-year-old shepherd from the village of Asi Gonia when the battle of Crete began: "It was in May 1941 that, all of a sudden, high in the sky, we heard the drone of many aeroplanes growing steadily closer." The German parachutists soon outnumbered the British troops who were forced first to retreat, then to evacuate, and Crete fell to the Germans. So began the Cretan resistance and the young shepherd's career as a war-time runner. In this unique account of Resistance life, Psychoundakis records the daily life of his fellow-Cretans, his treacherous journeys on foot from the eastern White Mountains to the western slopes of Mount Ida to transmit messages and transport goods, and his enduring friendships with British officers (like his eventual translator Patrick Leigh Fermor) whose missions he helped to carry out with unflagging courage, energy, and good humor"óPublisher. / World War, 1939-1945 -- Underground movements -- Greece -- Crete.† World War, 1939-1945 -- Personal narratives.† Guerre mondiale, 1939-1945 -- Mouvements de rÈsistance -- GrËce -- CrËte.† Guerre mondiale, 1939-1945 -- RÈcits personnels.† War -- Underground movements.†Personal narratives.† Greece -- Crete.† Resistance movements Personal observations.

1990réf. 9289J. C. Gieben. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Hardcover. Dust-soiling to top of textblock. Some foxing to endpapers and DJ. Small closed tear 1cm to upper corner of DJ.; Philosophica Vol. 3; 521 pages; According to Aristotle philosophy had come into being in the VIth century with Thales just as a mere disinterested pursuit of truth a curiosity for great problems those eventually called "metaphysical" ones which were substantially identical with those which Aristotle himself and his school were now raising. This abstract reading is very similar to that which views Greek poets as inspired by "eternal beauty" or by "art's for art sake" and which is nowadays completely discredited and given up by scholars of the history of literature. Against this view the present text proposes a new reading of the "archaic" presocratic scientists: in fact it is about those "sages" who lived on the boundaries of the Greek-speaking world before the concentration of such people in Periclean Athens. They were closely linked to their native towns Miletus Ephesus Croto Vele Acragas where they held high office; here there oral teaching and the public reading of their texts were followed closely by their fellow citizens. Thus the picture of the "cosmic republic" arises: to the "cosmic monarchy" of Homer and Hesiod the mythical world with Zeus as the king gods as the ministers and nature as the subject a different mythical world succeeds. Here the earth the sea the sky the human body and generally the "existing thing" all behave like isonomic "republican" towns or like the governing body of these towns. Philosophy will arise later in Athens of the Vth century. . 1990. 9070265559 . J. C. Gieben hardcover

1990For centuries, classical scholars have intensely debated the "position of women" in classical Athens. Did women have a vast but informal power, or were they little better than slaves? Using methods developed from feminist anthropology, Winkler steps back from this narrowly framed question and puts it in the larger context of how sex and gender in ancient Greece were culturally constructed. His innovative approach uncovers the very real possibilities for female autonomy that existed in Greek society. 269p.bibliography, index. Book
2008The Competitiveness of the Greek Economy is the first comprehensive survey of efforts in the Greek public and private sectors to modernise. It draws on interviews with lawmakers, the executive and businesspeople to record their progress across a 20-year period in drafting and implementing laws that harmonise Greece with the rest of the EU and the globalised marketplace. When the survey was first published in 2004, Minister of Development Dimitris Sioufas had it distributed to the members of the newly formed National Council of Competitiveness and Development as required reading. This edition was updated with an Introduction to include developments in the first half of 2005. The aim of the survey is to appear in updated form once a year. The survey is broken into the following chapters: Legislation, Bureaucracy, Taxation, Corruption, Labour, Education, Liberalisation, Telecommunications, Energy and Privatisation. 1989". the Golden Age of Greek Civilization, the period from the first wars against Persia & Carthage in the early 5th century B.C. to the accession of Alexander the Great in 336 B.C. Never have so many varied talents & so much genius flourished within so short a period: the time of Sophocles, Aristophanes, Herodotus, Aristotle, Socrates & Plato. Much of our culture today was anticipated by the classical Greeks & their work remains fundamental to Western civilization. Focusing primarily on individuals who shaped their own & future civilizations rather than solely on political & military affairs, Michael Grant takes 37 of the great men of the age, whose contributions he considers to have been particularly important, & places them in their historical context. Grant explores the factors that gave rise to such outstanding achievement in the cultural, philosophical, scientific & literary spheres, stressing not only those of Athens & other mainland states, but also of cities far to the west & east, notably in Sicily & on the shores of the Black Sea. Writing for the general reader as well as for the reader with a more specialized knowledge of classical Greece, Michael Grant has captured the most astonishing of civilizations at the height of its powers. In this accessible & endlessly fascinating volume, he brings to life some of the most extraordinary men in all of history." 337p. plates maps bibliography.index Book
