"Prima edizione della versione francese". Cfr. The Hill Collection of Pacific Voyages (2004),782, per la prima ediz. inglese del 1773: “Important collection chronicling English maritime expeditions. John Byron visited the Tuamoto Islands and Nikunau in what would later be called the Gilbert Islands. Captain Wallis discovered the volcanic island of Tahiti and Morea.. Captain Carteret discovered Pitcairn Island and some remote atolls in the South Seas. The first voyage under the not-yet-famous Captain Cook’s command was primarly of a scientific nature. The expedition was to sail to Tahiti in order to observe the transit of Venus across the disk of the sun, to determine the earth’s distance from the sun, and also to carry on the geographical discovery that John Byron had started. Entering the Pacific around Cape Horn, Cook reached Tahiti in 1769 and carried out the necessary astronomical observations.. Leaving Tahiti in July, Cook discovered, named and charted the Society Islands, and then, heading southwest, explored New Zealand. Cook then headed towards Australia and discovered and charted the eastern coast for 2.000 miles, naming the area New South Wales. He nearly lost his ship on the Great Barrier Reef. Both Australia and New Zealand were annexed by Britain as a result of this voyage, which began in 1768 and ended in 1771. Cook’s discoveries won him prominence, promotion, and the opportunity to sail again. They also ensured J. Hawkesworth’s position in maritime literary history, as the official chronicler of Cook’s first voyage”. Pagine ingiallite per la qualità della carta, altrimenti esemplare ben conservato.

2019New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In English. 544 p., ills. Ottoman Chrysochou (Mid-19th century). This volume presents the thirteen 19th-century fiscal censuses of the district of Hrisofi (Chrysochou) on the north-western side of Cyprus and joins the other two editions containing the censuses of the neighbouring kazas of Kouklia and Paphos released in 2015 and 2016 respectively. It covers the period from 1825 to 1848. The sources, although concerning taxation, trace the demographic and social status of the population in the mid-19th century, providing opportunities for further comparisons with sources of this type, both older and newer. Research fields can therefore be extended to other periods too, and can be directed at exploring issues that explain conversions to Islam, population movements, etc. The fiscal registers we examined reveal the picture that emerges from official administrative data of the Ottoman Empire, a picture that is no different from that described by Western travellers who visited the island, inspired by an interest in its glorious past in antiquity.

I have arranged the fortresses in the order as they fell to the armies of the Holy League in the campaigns of 1685-1792, ... 1996In 1910, Peter Contis had arrived in Pittsburgh as a penniless Greek immigrant. He began as a dishwasher, but within a year had opened his first restaurant. He put down roots in the new culture yet still preserved vitally important elements of the old. In this way, when eventually he retired and took up brushes, he was able to find a fresh vision of his city that drew as much on acute remembrance of his homeland as on familiarity with the urban landscape amid which he had served generations of diners and brought up his family. Soon after his death, Peter's wife Helen came across one of his paintings, unfinished. Spurred on by a granddaughter, Helen picked up brushes and proceeded to paint other pictures too. This remarkable story is eloquently told by an author who was able to visit the villages in the Peloponnese and to discover many of the springs of the artists' imagination. His narrative is accompanied by 40 color plates and 80 black and white illustrations. The paintings of the two artists are exhibited at The Carnegie Museum of Art to coincide with the publication of this book. It includes details of his family and backgound in the Peloponnese and about Greek immigrants in Pittsburgh, with photographs of the places and people.160p. illus.
