1980ref. 210471980. White Edmund. States of Desire. Fodor's. Gay Guide to San Francisco. Fodor's. Gay Guide to New York City. Ferrari Guides. Gay Paris. Out & About. Gay Travel Guides USA Resorts and Warm Weather Vacation. Access. Gay USA. Damron Publishing. Damron Accommodations. These late twentieth-century travel guides and narrative accounts document the development of LGBTQ mobility geography and community infrastructure during a period when openly queer travel required careful navigation of uneven legal protections and persistent social stigma. Spanning 1980 to 2000 the collection combines Edmund White's States of Desire a foundational work of gay travel writing grounded in firsthand observation of urban queer life with a range of directory-style guides that identify and organize information about bars hotels restaurants and social spaces across the United States and international destinations. These publications provide primary evidence of how queer travelers located and accessed safe environments and how commercial and community networks developed to support LGBTQ movement across cities and regions. Their function has been compared to earlier travel aids created for marginalized communities situating them within a broader history of navigational tools developed in response to exclusion from mainstream public space. 1 White Edmund. States of Desire: Travels in Gay America. New York: E.P. Dutton 1980. A non-fiction compilation of travel writing from novelist Edmund White covering his adventures across major cities in the U.S. as a gay man in the 1970s and 80s. 2 Fodor's Gay Guide to San Francisco 1997. First edition. 416 pages. A guide to gay and queer friendly hotels restaurants shops and attractions across the major cities of the USA. 7 Damron Accommodations Fourth Edition 2000. 638 pages. Measures 8.5" x 5.5". A comprehensive guide to queer friendly hotels resorts B&Bs and guest houses across North Central and South America Europe Africa India Australia and New Zealand with around 500 pages dedicated to 45 US states. Group of seven volumes issued between 1980 and 2000 combining narrative travel writing with directory-style guides. Formats range from compact city guides to larger regional and international directories. The Fodor's guides provide geographically focused coverage of San Francisco and New York City including surrounding destinations such as Fire Island and Monterey Bay while Ferrari's Gay Paris incorporates cultural context alongside listings for English-speaking travelers. Out & About and Access: Gay USA present broader national overviews of resorts hotels and attractions and Damron's Accommodations extends coverage globally with extensive listings across North America Europe and beyond. Entries are organized by city and region typically including addresses contact information and descriptions of queer-friendly establishments often accompanied by maps advertisements and event listings. These works emerged during a period of increasing visibility of LGBTQ communities alongside continued vulnerability particularly in the context of the AIDS crisis and ongoing discrimination. Travel guides of this kind were frequently updated and quickly rendered obsolete as venues changed or closed contributing to their limited long-term preservation. As noted by archivist Jack Swab such materials were often produced in relatively small print runs and discarded once outdated shaping their survival. Light wear consistent with use including previous ownership marking to the Ferrari volume; otherwise clean interiors and sound bindings; overall good to very good condition. The group offers a longitudinal record of LGBTQ travel networks and supports research into mobility urban history and late twentieth-century queer life. unknown books

Provenance: Fernand Gaulthier armorial bookplate. A rare Lyonese edition of a popular pocket guidebook for priests. A succinct survey of every aspect of the priesthood the text opens with the meaning of sacerdos priest a definition of the job: the care and salvation of human souls and the requirements for fulfilling this office: basic literacy and the ability to express oneself correctly. From abstract concepts to practical applications the fundamental tenets of the Christian Church are methodically reviewed: the articles of faith seven deadly sins cardinal and theological virtues three keys of the church three parts of penitence etc. as are the different kinds of sacraments the materials used for them and their meanings and the various clerical offices. The telegraphically short entries with abundant use in this small format edition of abbreviations permitted the inclusion of a vast amount of indispensable knowledge for the practicing priest. The last third of the text is devoted to an equally condensed introduction to the Computus with headline Abbreviatio compoti the all-important calculation of time based on the yearly date of Easter; it includes mnemonic verses and syllables. “The Cura clericalis reflecting the received wisdom on the subject defined four rules for the priest. He was to be a celebrant of Masses and so needed to understand the basic texts and to be able to pronounce the Latin grammatically and clearly. He must be a minister of the other sacraments and so needed to know what and how many they were to grasp the essential matter of the sacrament and be able to distinguish it from the peripheral features and to know the proper mode of administration. He was to be a confessor and so must above all be able to distinguish venial from deadly sin . Finally he was to be a ‘plebis doctor’ the teacher of his people able to instruct them in the articles of faith and the other precepts of God” E. Duffy The Stripping of the Altars: Traditional Religion in England 1400–1580 New Haven 2005 p. 57. Dozens of editions are recorded most surviving in one or two copies and some with no currently known locations. ISTC records nine incunable editions printed from ca. 1492-4 to 1500 all but one undated of which 8 from Germany and one printed in Paris. In the next century the earliest editions appeared in the northern Rhine and France and later in England and Italy. Pettegree and Walsby list 30 editions printed in France from ca. 1511 to 1580 French Books III & IV: Books Published in France Before 1601 in Latin and Languages Other Than French 2011 637490-63778. The anonymous printer of this edition of which one other copy is known Besançon Municipal Library was Claude Nourry as recently identified by Dr. Helwi Blom whom we thank for her kind assistance. Much of Nourry’s output was published without his name and he printed many editions without the place or date of printing. He issued another edition with full colophon in 1524 Baudrier 12 129; Gültlingen 1 86: 113; USTC 130305 but no present locations for that edition are known. The title woodblock was used in other Nourry editions including his 1523 Beroaldo Carmen lugubre de dominicae Passionis die USTC 130303 and the initial C on A2r appeared in editions from 1520. 1850ref. 4999EUROPEAN TRAVEL GUIDE FOR YOUNG READERS 12mo 240 pp with engraved title page frontispiece and 7 further acqua-forte engraved plates. Bound in original publisher's printed brown wrappers minor damage to spine clean and fresh and excellent and very genuine copy. With stamps likely a bookseller's to head of cover and title page "Rodi-Ferrario". Very good. Very rare first and only edition of this travel guide to Europe written as the title suggests for young readers in a pocket 12mo format. The guide moves from tours of Italy and Switzerland all the way to Poland Lithuania and Turkey as well as Great Britain providing 8 engraved plates of national costumes along the way. The charming illustrations depict: a young woman of 'Batz' Bath; a woman of Civita-Vechia Romagna; a citizen of Seville; a young woman of Gaeta Two Sicilies; a boatman from Le Havre a woman of Oberhash Switzerland; the Vizier of Constantinople; and finally a female Athenian. The commentary passes from the historical to contemporary details of travel between major destinations and occasional remarks of art-historical interest. Florence is noted to contain in the same breath the sepulcres of Galileo Aretino Machiavelli and Alfieri the latter having been sculpted by Canova p 72. England Scotland and Ireland are noted very much in passing: although the empire stretches 'to the Ganges' the islands themselves are accorded little interest. The guide does mention "the reknown of the univeristy of Oxford the most learned in England" with no mention however of its more easterly counterpart. Unrecorded in OCLC no U.S. copy traced.
