Juni 1833 zu Danzig studierte zu Königsberg und in Berlin wo er speziell Schüler Albrecht von Graefe's war. Promoviert 1855 widmete er sich der Ophthalmologie habilitierte sich 1864 und wirkte seit 1867 als a. o. seit 1874 als ord. Prof. dieses Faches und Direktor der Univ.-Augenklinik in Tübingen bis zu seinem 22. Juli 1895 erfolgten Ableben. Seine hervorragendsten Publikationen sind: "Das Sehen mit zwei Augen etc." 1861 - "Die Refractions- und Accommodations-Anomalien des Auges" 1866 - "Die Behandlung der Amaurosen und Amblyopien mit Strychnin" 1871 und weitere entsprechende Beiträge zu Graefe's und Saemisch' Handbuch. Nagel begründete 1870 den von ihm herausgegebenen ophthalm. Jahresbericht und liess seit 1881 "Mittheilungen aus der ophthalm. Klinik in Tübingen" erscheinen." Pagel: Biogr.
