An exceptionally bright first edition Baedeker guide to Germany in 1936 retaining the original unclipped dust wrapper and folding plan of the Berlin Olympic grounds. In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Complete with the scarce original unclipped dust wrapper. The first edition of Baedeker's single-volume English-language guide to Germany. Also retaining the folding plan of the Reichssportfeld the sporting complex constructed for the 1936 Berlin Olympics which is frequently absent from surviving copies. Collated complete. The only Baedeker guide to describe Germany as a whole under Nazi regime. While the earlier Baedekers were known for their objectivity this edition was revised to meet Nazi ideas of German history. The Versailles Treaty is deemed here "not a real peace in accordance with President Wilson's fourteen points but a dictated peace or rather a penal sentence which the vanquished were forced to accept". Published the year of the 1936 Olympic Games the introductory information reflects this encouraging tourists to visit the scene of the games and where one can go for winter sports. Also recommended for a traveller's sightseeing tour through the capital is a cemetery in the heart of the city where Horst Wessel a martyr for the Nazi party is buried. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities with bumping slightly more pronounced to lower corners. Slight fading to lower edge of front boards and tail of spine. One or two very minor pale marks to rear board. Ink ownership inscription to half-title bleeding through slightly to verso to which a weight and measure table is printed. Dust wrapper very smart. Slight edge wear to extremities resulting in the odd very small chip closed tear and creased more pronounced to upper extremities. Tape repair along top edge and to extremities at lower edge of verso. Small chip to rear wrap. Spine slightly sunned. Very light rubbing to wraps. Internally firmly bound. Pages exceptionally bright and clean. Near Fine Karl Baedeker, Publisher hardcover
