1871ref. 23255Sydney: Caxton Steam Machine Printing Office 1871. Wraps. Very good - condition. Scarce biographical booklet the only one on Ristori published in Sydney describing the life of the Italian actress Adelaide Ristori renowned as a tragedienne. Ristori visited Australia with a large Italian entourage for 4 months in 1875 performing in Ballarat Melbourne and Sydney and this booklet was likely published as a promotional piece for the tour. This Australian booklet is not dated although Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia assigns a date ca. 1871. It was translated from Italian into English to be used as an advertising piece for Ristori's 1875 Australia tour. It was published at the Caxton printing office which was functioning under that name until 1876. Adelaide Ristori 1822 - 1906 toured widely including Paris 1855 1856 London Madrid 1857 and the United States 1866. The booklet describes Ristori's American visits: the first tour was mainly in the North the events of the Civil War making a stop in New Orleans impossible. Ristori did eventually visit there reciting pieces at the grand bazaar following which she "had to accept a sumptuous supper which was attended by the leading people of the South headed by the generals Beauregard and Lee". p19. In 1875 after one of her American tours she traveled to Australia where her company's lavish productions of historical drama were performed in Italian. Ristori performed the roles of Medea Mary Stuart and the title role in Elizabeth Queen of England written especially for her by Paolo Giacometti. Such was Ristori's popularity that in Victoria a company working several gold mines on the rich Berry Lead near Allendale north of Ballarat was named Ristori after her. This led to an adjoining town being named Ristori Town. 8vo 29pp. Printed glossy paper wrappers the title printed in black at front wrapper with "Adelaide Ristori" in an elaborate type font. Staplebound. The wrappers slightly dusty the rear wrapper with two small areas where the gloss surface of the wrapper has been rubbed away; small amount of fox spotting to final leaves. 1920ref. 166841920. Announcement card for royal visit to Australia of Prince Edward who famously abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. The public reception for this visit to Sydney was held at 10:30 am Friday 18th June 1920; the reaction to his visit is described by Edward in his autobiography: "The ‘touching mania' one of the most remarkable phenomena connected with my travels took the form of a mass impulse to prod some part of the Prince of Wales. Whenever I entered a crowd it closed around me like an octopus. I can still hear the shrill excited cry ‘I touched him!' If I were out of reach then a blow to my head with a folded newspaper appeared to satisfy the impulse". With floral border flag crests battleship. Color printed card 9 1/2 x 6 3/4". ref. 9946Melbourne 1914: Albert J Mullett Govt Printer. Pamphlet. The Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia. The War - Temperance Measures in Russia. The Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia The War - Temperance Measures in Russia: despatch from his Majesty's Ambassador at Petrograd enclosing a memorandum on the subject of the temperance measures adopted in Russia since the outbreak of the European War Melbourne : Albert J Mullett Government Printer for the State of Victoria. No 108 - F6748. Folio 340x210mm cream single leaf printed to both sides 2pp When World War I broke out in 1914 almost all of the participant countries including Russia restricted alcohol. Because of the policies noted here closing all liquor outlets and prohibiting the sale of alcohol until the end of the war Russia was able to put its armies in the field much quicker than Germany securing early victories on the Eastern Front. Although the Tsar had been seeking to reduce his empire's reliance on and addiction to vodka spurred on by the Government's absolute control for some centuries of vodka production and distribution for some time in September 1914 he effectively invoked prohibition; making Russia the first prohibition country in the world five years early than the USA. Some scholars now contend that this prohibition and its economic consequences was one of the main causes contributing to the Russian Revolution. Prohibition of State controlled Vodka continued until Stalin came to power in 1924. The recipient Sir Edward Grey was the British Foreign Secretary. Why he forwarded it to the Australian Parliament or why it was published in 1915 is unclear; howeverduring World War I temperance and patriotism had become firmly welded together in the public's mind due to increased activism by the temperance movement. In 1915 there was a significant debate about temperance and its importance to the war effort. Bipartisan political and religious support meant that temperance measures but not prohibition were enacted throughout Australia such as early closing hours to 'preserve the empire' and 'support the troops'. An intriguing insight into the confluence of war and prohibition. A fine copy. § Trove records 1 holding. Only 950 copies were produced. Albert J Mullett, Govt Printer unknown
