19048vo [22 x 14.5 cm]; xv, 180 pp, 15 plates from photos including frontis, index. original cloth, gilt title lettering on front cover and spine, cover lightly soiled, interior is clean, else a fine copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The first half of the book describes the author's journey in 1901 to Baghdad, Basra, Bahirin, Muscat, Sherpore, etc around the Persian Gulf where he visits some areas off the beaten track. The second half of the book describes his stay on several Pacific islands including Tonga, Haapai, Fiji, etc and is remarkable for its explicit illustrations of cannibals, including one entitled 'Cannibals dragging prisoners to the ovens', two others showing cannibals slaughtering their victims. The author didn't seem too concerned about becoming a victim. There have been only two copies at auction in the last 25 years, the last at Sotheby's in 1997 selling at US$782, although it wasn't in as good a condition as this copy.

1862ref. 80759London: Hall Virtue and Co 1862. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London Hall Virtue and Co. 1862. Duodecimo viii 167 pages. Blind-decorated dark green ribbed cloth lightly marked rubbed and bumped at the extremities; two trifling surface blemishes to the front pastedown; an excellent copy with the contemporary and thus very early blindstamp of the Adelaide bookseller W.C. Rigby on the front free endpaper. 'I was offered some time before leaving South Australia strong inducements to write a history of that virtuous territory which should be palatable to certain classes of a small community; but as I had no high opinion of either the colony or the principles on which it was founded or its subsequent career I could not be the partisan at any price of a locality which I could not conscientiously recommend as a suitable field of emigration for any class of my fellow-country-men' author's preface although he showed the cut of his nib on the title page: 'Castigat ridendo mores'. Indeed nothing is sacred so it is perhaps hardly surprising to learn that 'every copy available was purchased and destroyed by the Angas family' Ferguson 10265 citing a note in the Petherick copy in the National Library of Australia. However in our experience and with the passage of time Petherick appears to have overstated the case. Hall, Virtue and Co hardcover

A seminal study of the Pitjandjara sic of the Mann Ranges and the Junkandjara sic of the Musgrave Ranges on the borders of South Central and Western Australia Mountford explains his use of these names on page 40. The following caveat is printed on the verso of the dedication page: 'Where Australian Aborigines are concerned and in areas where traditional Aboriginal religion is still significant this book should be used only after consultation with local male religious leaders. This restriction is important. It is imposed because the concept of what is secret or may not be revealed to the uninitiated in Aboriginal religious belief and action varies considerably throughout the Australian continent; and because the varying views of Aborigines in this respect must on all occasions be observed'.
