1838ref. 131290London: 'Ordered by the House of Commons to be Printed' 1838. Very Good. London 'Ordered by the House of Commons to be Printed' 1838. Foolscap folio 21 1 docket pages with numerous tables. Uncut and sewn as issued; outer pages slightly dusty; light foxing throughout; an excellent copy. Great Britain and Ireland Parliamentary Paper Number 685 of 1838. The bulk of this important paper pages 4-19 is given over to 'Nos. 5 6 7. Copy of a Despatch from Governor Sir James Stirling bearing Date 15 October 1835 forwarding a Memorial from the Inhabitants of Western Australia; together with a Copy of the Answer which has been returned thereto'. It is somewhat more than that. Stirling's covering letter explains that 'The signatures attached to this memorial . belong to about one-third of the adult male population of the settlement and represent also about one third of its property in land and capital. The grievances under which the memorialists consider themselves and their fellow colonists to labour are five in number'. The five grievances are well-aired; all signatories are identified; there are five pages of lists of lands reserved for public purposes individuals or 'Assigned to or Reserved for Civil Naval and Military Officers from commencement of the Colony in June 1829 to 6 October 1835'. The second and third lists provide name rank or situation where applicable number of acres district assigned or reserved - and when and remarks. A sample record for an individual is that pertaining to Robert Ramsay for whom an 'uncertain' number of acres was reserved at Plantagenet on 12 April 1831: 'Master of brig "Britannia". On south shore of Princes Royal Harbour reserved 18 months to form a whaling establishment and then resumed on failure of conditions'. The last four pages in this section contain Lord Glenelg's thoughts on the matter as of 7 March 1837. The limited information relating to the fledgling colony of South Australia occupies only pages 20 and 21. Ferguson 2511. Provenance: the signature 'C.A.S. Hawker' is written in pencil at the head of the first page. Charles Allan Seymour Hawker 1894-1938 politician and pastoralist: his grandfather George Charles Hawker arrived in Adelaide with his brother Charles in September 1840. They settled on land at Bungaree near Clare in December 1841; C.A.S. Hawker he was born there. He was seriously wounded on several occasions at the Western Front losing one eye and 'his legs were in surgical irons to the end of his life'. He was a minister in the Lyons Government from 1932 until he 'was killed on 25 October 1938 when the aircraft "Kyeema" crashed into Mount Dandenong in Victoria. His untimely death was sharply felt. He had been an outstanding and respected figure in the Federal parliament whom some of his own party would have supported as prime minister. For the last eight or nine years Mr Aiston has dwelt at Mungeranie although more than twenty years he has spent in aborigines' haunts . Above all an incalculable debt of gratitude is due to Sir Baldwin Spencer who not once but several times read through and corrected the manuscript'. Provenance: Sir John Burton Cleland 1878-1971 with his contemporary ownership signature in pencil J.B. Cleland on the front flyleaf. Cleland pathologist and naturalist began 'a systematic study of what must be one of the largest series of meticulous autopsy examinations ever conducted by one person - over 7000. Cleland regarded each post-mortem examination as a voyage of discovery and never wearied continuing to do routine autopsy work into his mid-80s . He had an unrivalled experience in macroscopic morbid anatomy and histopathology and often diagnosed rare conditions almost at a glance. With each further 1000 autopsy records amassed he would analyse and epitomize his findings and publish them in the "Medical Journal of Australia" or the Royal Adelaide Hospital's "Medical and Scientific Archives" which he founded and edited in 1921-48' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. The journal 'gives a minutely detailed description of the country passed over . It will be seen that this hitherto comparatively unexplored country has been thoroughly examined. 'At 57 Ross was engaged by Elder to lead an expedition to explore west of the Peake and to go on to Perth. 'When George Allen 1832-1907 joined John Ruskin's evening drawing classes at the Working Men's College in 1854 he was working as an apprentice carpenter for his uncle in Clerkenwell London. Enthused and encouraged by Ruskin who saw in him an "innate disposition to art" Allen declined employment with William Morris' decorative arts firm in order to devote himself to Ruskin's service as his assistant and most reliable engraver. From 1870 he also became Ruskin's publisher and in 1874 he built "Sunnyside" a large house in Orpington Kent which acted as a storage area for Ruskin's past works and future publications up to the "Library Edition" of 1903-12 completed by Allen's family' online information from an exhibition commemorating George Allen held at Lancaster University. 1873ref. 145566Adelaide: Frearson & Brother Publishers 1873. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Adelaide Frearson & Brother Publishers 1873 'second edition'/ 1873. Duodecimo 70 10 advertisements pages later extra-illustrated with 3 steel engravings and an unrelated leaf from another publication; one leaf of advertisement misbound in the middle of the volume and several others likely lacking. Colour-lithographed pictorial front wrapper by Penman & Galbraith included in the pagination present but lacking the rear wrapper. Later cloth subsequently rebacked both amateur efforts with the title 'Hobgoblins' in black ink on the front cover with a decorative flourish and within simple ruled borders; front wrapper cropped at the top edge; some marks tanning small chips and other signs of age and handling but a decent copy nevertheless. A unique association copy of this rare South Australian Christmas gift book. It comes from the collection of one of the authors Adelaide journalist and satirical writer Spencer John Skipper who identifies himself on the title page as Unohoo and his co-author Udontnohoo as 'D. Magill'. He has annotated each contribution to the volume with the initials of the respective author including his own verses in the advertisements. Unohoo was one of the numerous pen names used by Skipper but this appears to be the first identification of Udontnohoo as Daniel Magennis Magill his colleague at the 'South Australian Register'. This publication was '. proudly announced as "thoroughly South Australian" in content and production. It can still be read with pleasure and includes some good-humoured prose satire written with a deft touch and some pleasant even affecting poems' Paul Depasquale: 'A Critical History of South Australian Literature' page 113. This 'second edition' appears to be simply a reissue of the first edition sheets with the addition of the colour lithographed front cover and further advertisements the text 'Second edition' is here cropped from the top of the front wrapper. The 'craft' binding would appear to be the handiwork of Skipper himself. Ferguson 17602. Frearson & Brother, Publishers hardcover

The Wyatt contribution was not previously published as such; the text here was 'principally extracted from his official reports' stemming from his relatively short and unhappy time as the third South Australian Protector of the Aborigines from 1837 to 1839 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. 1790ref. 143934Paris: F. Dufart 1790. Very Good. Paris F. Dufart circa 1790. A hand-coloured engraved map printed surface 378× 415 mm sheet size approximately 420 × 540 mm. 'Gravée par Tardieu l'Ainé . Dessiné par Poirson . Ecrit par Beaublé'. Original folds as issued; some minor uneven tanning; in very good condition. An uncommon chart of the Pacific Ocean and Australia showing magnetic variation and dip drawing on observations made in the course of Pacific voyages after 1775 most notably Cook's third voyage. It is most likely from a duodecimo edition of Buffon's 'Histoire naturelle générale et particulière' around the end of the eighteenth century 'PL. III. Tome XVI' and 'Page 58' are printed in the top margin. It is based on a larger chart in four sheets attributed to Jean-Charles de Borda. The engraver Tardieu is one of half a dozen members of the family working as engravers at the period one of whom P.A.F. Tardieu would engrave the charts published in the official account of the Baudin voyage. F. Dufart unknown

Large quarto two volumes of text plus the elephant folio atlas containing 18 charts and 10 plates. Half dark blue calf and cream cloth; essentially a fine set in the custom-made base of the dark red felt-covered wooden storage box and fitted perspex lid the base a little sunned and lightly worn around the extremities the lid a little scuffed. The publisher's printed cardboard box is also present. A superb production limited to only 500 numbered sets this is number 261. The storage box was designed with a matching two-door lid opening at the centre and attached to the base with piano hinges. About a third of the edition was issued in these boxes as advertised. Apparently the successful tender was paid in full soon after the job began and the box-maker was last seen heading for the hills overseas with the money and a big smile! The problem was 'solved' by securing clear perspex lids which fitted snugly over the custom-made bases. Government Printer hardcover

Internally clean with contemporary pencil notations on front pastedowns. A very good sound set. $850. From the prestigious Bibliothek des Reichsgerichts the library of the Supreme Court of the German Reich in Leipzig with their small circular institutional stamps on each title page. A remarkably complete unbroken consecutive set of this key Australian legal serial which was issued over three decades and is frequently found only as scattered individual volumes. Beyond its scarcity this legal digest provides a front-row seat to the development of early Australian jurisprudence from late-colonial times through the Great Depression. It provides an unbroken record of Victoria's highly specialized Courts of Mines critical to understanding the legal architecture of the Australian goldfields-and the Court of Insolvency documenting early corporate architecture and financial collapses across three decades of economic volatility. Crucially the volumes map how these state-level rulings interacted with the newly minted High Court of Australia est. 1903 and the Privy Council in London making it a cornerstone resource for comparative common law research. This specific set carries extraordinary provenance having served as a reference resource for the highest court of the German Empire and Weimar Republi. unknown
