He discovered several islands, including one that still bears his name, lying 1200 miles south of Honolulu. Included is an account of the first American naval exploring expedition to the southern hemisphere, 1829-30, sponsored by the U. S. government and commanded by Benjamin Pendleton.' This is out of proportion to any risks that the research might present. Dr Iain Lamont said that excessive regulation is causing the cancellation of some research work and the transfer of other work overseas. He advocated changes to New Zealand's legislation to reduce unnecessary compliance costs while continuing to ensure that any risk to the environment or public health is minimised. University of Otago's Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry and Deputy Chair of the Institutional Biological Safety Committee Dr Iain Lamont will be presenting evidence supporting the University of Otago's submission to the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification in Wellington on Wednesday 25th October."
