1948réf. 146571Adelaide: 'Printed for private circulation' at The Hassell Press 1948. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide 'Printed for private circulation' at The Hassell Press 1948. Octavo vi 71 pages plus 2 plates from portrait photographs. Quarter green cloth and textured cream papered boards lettered in green; textured paper a little tanned; a few other trifling signs of age and handling; an excellent copy. Geoffrey William Hassell was killed in action off the coast of Norway on 5 April 1945 at the age of 20 while piloting a RAAF Bristol Beaufighter. This private memorial volume printing a selection of Geoffrey's letters sent during training and on active service was produced by his parents Fred and Minnie Hassell at their Hassell Press. Their personal 'With Compliments' card is mounted on the front pastedown. The book is rare in our experience and the edition was presumably a very limited one. 'Printed for private circulation' at The Hassell Press hardcover
1934réf. 108344Adelaide: Gillingham & Co. Ltd 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide Gillingham & Co. Ltd. 1934. Quarto viii 94 pages with 19 illustrations from photographs featuring approximately 150 implements. Cloth a little scuffed and rubbed and bumped at the extremities with minimal wear; endpapers unevenly offset; a few mild signs of handling; a very good copy. Provenance: Stanley Robert Mitchell 1881-1963 ethnologist mineralogist metallurgist and businessman with his ownership signature on the front free endpaper. 'In the 1930s and 1940s he belonged to a distinguished group of "amateur" ethnologists and collectors who gathered around Sir Baldwin Spencer. They collected massive numbers of Aboriginal implements and championed the value of field-work over "armchair theorists". They believed that the raw geological material was the dominant factor in determining the forms of stone implements and that these forms had not changed from earliest times to the period of European contact' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. One correction in ink 'lava' for 'land' near the end of the first paragraph on page 14 and some light marginal emphases in pencil are presumably by Mitchell. The original four-page prospectus a little chipped and torn at the edges is loosely inserted. Gillingham & Co., Ltd hardcover

Quarto 124 pages with numerous maps and illustrations some in colour; a later list of nine errata two of them containing errors! is loosely inserted. Colour-pictorial card covers; tiny surface abrasion to the front cover; an excellent copy. The short introduction by the author's niece Monica Moyes states that 'Some years ago my uncle sought to have his manuscript of twenty two stories published . Difficulties arose and the years passed. but we have at last been able to cary out his wishes. We have taken the liberty of adding other stories that tell of his achievements his life and work'. 'Captain Morton Henry Moyes OBE 1886-1981 was a teacher naval officer and Antarctic explorer of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. Winner of three polar medals Captain Moyes took part in the Australian Antarctic Expedition 1911-1914 under the leadership of Dr Douglas Mawson; the Shackleton Relief Expedition 1916-1917 under the leadership of Captain John King Davis; and the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition BANZARE 1929-1930 again under the leadership of Sir Douglas Mawson. His Antarctic recollections recounted in his own words in a wry and readable style reveal a man of courage of humility of humour and of determination; an intensely loyal man who never lost his fascination for living and working on the vast Antarctic continent' rear cover blurb. We have established from receipts retained by the Moyes family that the print run of the first edition was 100 copies with the reprint comprising a mere 50 copies. [The Moyes Family] paperback
