1918Best.-Nr. 108521At Sea: The Societies as above 1918. Very Good. At Sea The Societies as above 10 August 1918. Duodecimo 172 × 107 mm 4 pages a bifolium last page blank comprising the title page and the toast list-cum-programme on the centrespread. Folded horizontally with a few light creases elsewhere and occasional light foxing; overall in very good condition. Not surprisingly we can find no record of this most ephemeral item. 'Pte C. Spencer Smith' is written at the head of the first page. The service record of 55891 Cecil Spencer Smith indicates that he hailed from the Adelaide suburb of Hindmarsh enlisted on 8 February 1918 'Embarked for Active Service . HMAT "Orontes" Sydney 5-6-18 Disembarked Liverpool 11-8-18'. This Final Reunion must have been quite a party; all nine entertainments listed on the programme are preceded by a toast. This might be related somewise to the instruction printed at the foot of the first page: 'Guests are requested to bring the Lid of their Mess Tin with them'. The Societies, as above] unknown
1941Best.-Nr. 79998Adelaide: 'Printed and Published At "the Horace Walpole Press"' The Author 1941. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide 'Printed and Published At "the Horace Walpole Press"' The Author 1941. Octavo v first two blank 5 last two blank 484 pages. Overlapping limp cloth with a paper title-label on the spine; covers slightly marked bumped and indented with marginal pinpricks to the front cover and the first 60 or so pages; endpapers offset with the rear one marked; overall a very good copy of an indifferent production meaning the pinpricks are probably 'as-issued'!. Inscribed 'To Eric & Jean McLaughlin with the Compliments & Best Wishes of F.E. Rogers Xmas /41'. The book was hand-set and printed by the author who apologizes in the preface for the many errors present. 'These errors are due I think mainly to composing much of the matter without an intervening manuscript stage' - no mean feat! Frederick Edward Rogers 1865-1947 was an English doctor. He recounts in his memoirs that 'In 1923 my health being indifferent my wife and I and two younger daughters set sail for Adelaide South Australia where we joined our second girl who had married a Digger'. We have previously sighted an obituary that mentioned that a second volume of memoirs was published in 1945; Farmer does not record this in 'Private Presses and Australia' 1972 and the supplement in 1976. Best.-Nr. 109232The Hundred of Kappakoola sic derived from Kappakoola Hill near Wudinna on the Eyre Peninsula is the best we can do to give this item some context. The horse features at South Australian country races in a few issues of the 'Sporting News' in 1913 and 1914 information courtesy of Trove; apparently she photographed better than she raced. unknown
1900Best.-Nr. 128025Unley: Chas P. Scott 1900. Very Good. Unley Chas P. Scott circa 1900s. A sepia-toned postcard-format gelatin silver photograph 138 × 87 mm blind-stamped with the photographer's details 'Chas P. Scott Unley S.A.'; the caption is inkstamped at the head of the recto and the verso is printed for use as a postcard. Tiny surface chip and crease to the top right-hand corner-tip; in excellent condition. Charles Scott 1878-1928 is 'Listed as photographer at 21A Waymouth Street Adelaide in directories from 1909 to 1915 his "private residence" being given as 10 Grace Street Goodwood Park' Photohistory SA website. The Art Gallery of SA gives the date '1903-04' for this image in its collection; this example with the address in Unley an Adelaide suburb near Goodwood Park would appear to have been produced prior to Scott's relocation to Waymouth Street. The Adelaide 'Chronicle' for 8 September 1932 quotes a letter from F.W. Marsh formerly of Oodnadatta reminiscing about this portrait a copy of which hung 'in the strangers' room at Tattersalls Club. Well Jacky Rags when about three years old came with two other black boys early one morning to my place in Oodnadatta. When I asked what they wanted I was told that his father Charlie had killed his mother that night with a boomerang and that Jacky had come to me for protection. I kept him for a long time but when he was about 15 years old he was persuaded to ask me to allow him to go for a spell meaning he wanted to go to the camp in the bush. I let him go and later found that the older blacks had performed certain ceremonies on him from which he never recovered. He developed consumption and died a year or so later. I think living on the whites' food for so many years and then going to the bush where those to be initiated are starved until they are very weak so that the ceremony can be performed easily led to his early death. The name Jacky Rags was given him because whatever clothes he received in a day or two they would be in rags. He was a good lad'. Chas P. Scott unknown
1839Best.-Nr. 131166London: C. Dolman 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. London C. Dolman 1839. Octavo ii title leaf to Volume VI 449-466 pages. Full green morocco bordered and lettered in gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe; expertly sealed tear to the inner margin of the title leaf; in fine condition. The reviewer well-informed but facetious in the extreme engages almost entirely with James's book and shares some of his reservations about the planning and organisation of the fledgling colony of South Australia. He concludes: 'Mr James's book exposes all that is evil in the management of the experiment of colonizing on the new plan . and in order that both sides may be heard the reader may consult Mr Stephens's hypercritical and somewhat captious reply'. 1929Best.-Nr. 147300Kapunda: 'Kapunda Herald' Print 1929. Very Good. Kapunda 'Kapunda Herald' Print 1929. Small octavo 116 pages. Later red rexine lettered in gilt on the spine; boards a little bowed; endpapers slightly bubbled and offset; an excellent copy. 'This short account would have been impossible to put forth in book form but for the generous co-operation of Mr L.N. Tilbrook our valued friend and fellow townsman and the present-day proprietor and editor of the "Kapunda Herald". To him we owe our grateful thanks for his risk in printing and publishing. Also to those who readily contributed their store of "memories" we offer our sincere thanks our only regret being that more did not join in the work and thus enable a fuller and more complete volume to be issued' preface. The primary binding is blue cloth; these red rexine covers were produced by the bindery of the State Library of South Australia in the late 1960s or early 1970s. We have seen reference to a similar copy with the ownership signature of the South Australian historian Dr John Tregenza. It included a note in his hand on the front endpaper: 'Made up from sheets discovered in the "Kapunda Herald" office by R.J. Noye c. 1966. Presented by Mr Noye 15 May 1969'. Robert James 'Bob' Noye 1932-2002 was a Clare local historian and pre-eminent photo-historian. The original issue of this parochial history is very rare; this later issue is very scarce in our experience. 'Kapunda Herald' Print unknown

Best.-Nr. 108942Fine. A gelatin silver photograph 237 × 307 mm unmounted as issued: in fine condition. The ink-stamp of the photographer 'J. Gazard 111 King Wm. St. Adelaide' is on the verso together with a pencilled caption reading: 'June 21 1905. Unveiling of the Monument to Colonel Light the founder of Adelaide in Light Square Adelaide where his remains are buried'. Light Square became the burial place of Colonel William Light in 1839; the original monument erected over his grave in 1843 became damaged and was replaced. 'The new monument which still stands today consisted of a theodolite placed on a tall column. It was unveiled on the 21 June 1905 to a large crowd that included "old colonists" who had witnessed Light's funeral 66 years previously seated on either side of the monument. Sir Samuel Way addressed the crowd reinforcing Light's legend by recalling the achievements and adventures of the founder of Adelaide. The Mayor of Adelaide Mr Theodore Bruce then proceeded with the unveiling of the monument' 'Adelaidia' website. This impressive image captures it all. unknown

1890Best.-Nr. 128029Adelaide: Fruhling Studio 62 Rundle Street 1890. Very Good. Adelaide Fruhling Studio 62 Rundle Street mid- to late-1890s. A vintage gelatin silver photograph 134 × 94 mm mounted on the original cabinet card 165 × 110 mm with the photographer's details blindstamped in the bottom margin. Both the photograph and mount are in excellent condition. Contemporary business directories indicate that Fruhling Studio commenced operating from 62 Rundle Street in 1895 'Portrait and Enlarging Co. Fruhling & Co.'; this 'continued until 1913 when the address was changed to 62A Rundle Street. From 1918 to 1927 the address was given as 103A Rundle Street. Although listed as Fruhling & Co. in directories the name Fruhling Studios sic was usually printed on their photographs' Photohistory SA website. The particulars of the uniform elude us but the following information about the parlous state of military affairs in colonial SA at the time this photograph was taken provides some context. These comments come from an unpublished manuscript by Geoffrey H. Manning 'The Russians are Coming - The Defence of Colonial South Australia' now in the State Library of SA. 'By May of 1896 it was finally recognised that the basis upon which the military forces of the Australian colonies were organised was unsatisfactory and it was to cure defects and place matters on a more effective footing that a Consolidating and Amending Act had been passed in the previous session. In the dying days of Parliament its progress through all stages was pushed on and the headlong speed with which it was carried through the two chambers necessarily militated against the critical examination of its many clauses. The fact that the majority of the sections were merely repetitions of those in existing Acts was obviously no justification for dealing with the Bill in such a spasmodic manner. After the Act was assented to more than four months were allowed to pass without anything being done to bring the members of the old force together with a view to acquainting them with the conditions under which they were to be asked to enroll and this policy of procrastination was observed to the last. Enrolment commenced in August but in the face of the many other allurements held out to the youth of South Australia in the form of cricket football baseball lacrosse and - most attractive of all - cycling it was not to be wondered that the process of recruiting was painfully slow; by mid-February 1897 there had been 611 enrollments. With this change came the end of the colourful uniforms that marked the early military history of the colony. The scarlet tunics white-striped blue trousers and white helmets that had followed the grey uniform of the 1880s - the "Destitutes" they called the men in these uniforms - were replaced by khaki with maroon facings and a felt hat. The first parade of the new military forces took place on 3 October 1896 when "The South Australian Army" presented a rather nondescript appearance owing to the fact of so many recruits being in the ranks and yet unprovided with uniforms and also a proportion of men in the old force whose uniforms were worn out and too shabby for wear. The public manifested little interest in the proceedings - it was race-day - and moreover the band was not expressively in evidence. A few people probably the mothers and fathers the sisters and the aunts of the new recruits attended'. Fruhling Studio, 62 Rundle Street unknown
