The letters and note are good on lightly aged paper; the third letter with closed tear at foot of both leaves affecting Walker's signature. Two of the three letters are docketed and bear the Society's stamp. The cuttings good on aged high-acidity paper. Letter One 4to 1 p: He cannot afford the Society's subscription due to 'the immensely increased taxation by the Federal Government and by the State Governments in N.S. Wales and Queensland not to mention donations to various War Funds'. Letter Two 4to 3 pp: He notices that 'our "Labour" Prime Minister is being feted in an admirable and very hospitable manner by the Mother Country. So far good.' Asks Wood to 'get some person public man if possible to ask the Rt. Hon. W. M. Hughes P.C.' two questions. 'For your private information Mr. Hughes has been the most prominent Member of the Wharf Labourers Union for years and at the present time notwithstanding the war Unionists will not work alongside non-Unionists are never long satisfied with the ruling rates of wages . So much for Australian Wharf Labourers' Patriotism!' He is enclosing '17 newspaper cuttings' from which Wood 'will have some slight idea of the extraordinary political goings on here under Labour Ministries. Mr Hughes and I are on friendly terms outside politics. I have always admired his pluck and ability and as I was in the Senate from 1901 to 1913 when my health obliged me to reluctantly retire into private life we used to meet frequently.' The third page of the letter lists the 'Newspaper extracts' with comments on most. The accompanying cuttings are numbered and two are lacking numbers 11 and 17. Letter Three 4to 2 pp encloses 'information re Wharf Labourers' Wages in Sydney supplied to me by the Manager of one of the Shipping Companies here'. 'If the Rt Hon Wm Hughes remains at home it may or may not be a good thing for the public at large but it will probably have the effect of smashing up the Federal Labour Party into two - the Extremes and the Moderates. Whatever Hughes' faults may be he has been a splendid friend to the Labour Unionist Party in Australia.' Second leaf headed 'Wharf Labourers' Wages'. Accompanied by the autograph note to which are attached a further four newspaper cuttings headed 'Preference. New Federal Regulation.' 'Routed by Returned Soldiers. Yarra Bank Scenes.' 'Strikes. Drillers at Eveleigh Workshops. Halfpenny per Hour Involved.' and 'Fair Rents.' He thanks him for his 'very kind note' but regrets that 'owing to my being engaged on a lecturing tour for some time to come I am at present unable to fix a date to avail myself of your invitation'. He hopes to be able to do so when 'free from my appointments'. For information on de Rougemont' see B. G. Andrews's entry on him in the Dictionary of Australian Biography. Born in Switzerland at around the age of sixteen 'he became a footman to the actress Fanny Kemble touring extensively and learning fluent English. In 1870-74 he was a valet in London and in 1875 came to Australia as a butler with the new governor of Western Australia Sir William Robinson'. Back in London he was introduced to the Wide World Magazine by Sir J. Henniker Heaton and 'From August 1898 to May 1899 it serialized "The adventures of Louis de Rougemont" which focused fancifully on the astounding experiences he had had while allegedly spending thirty odd years as a castaway among the Aboriginals of North-West and Central Australia. The articles were republished as "The Adventures of Louis de Rougemont as Told by Himself" 1899; they were fluently and cleverly written but essentially the plausible concoction of a colonial Munchausen.' 13 Bloomsbury Street, London W.C. 19 April 1899. unknown

1890Best.-Nr. 109514Adelaide: Printed for the Proprietor and Publisher A. Timmann at the 'Pioneer' Office 1890. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide Printed for the Proprietor and Publisher A. Timmann at the 'Pioneer' Office 1890 and 1891. Octavo 13 issues bound in one volume 148 pages continuous pagination plus the large folding supplement to Number 10 March 7 1891 a broadside 455 × 335 mm with illustrations. Contemporary flush-cut quarter leather and stippled cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; neat repairs to the leather at the head and foot of the spine; acidic newsprint used for the last two numbers uniformly tanned; overall in excellent condition. The recto of the large folding supplement to Number 10 contains the text with three line illustrations of an article that 'appeared originally in the "SA Register" in six short letters': 'Protection or Freedom Our Manufactories Our People and Our Land Values'. The verso of the broadside is devoted entirely to advertisements some illustrated with large engravings. The final issue of the journal was Volume 5 Number 5 24 December 1892. Although the Single Tax League of South Australia figures prominently throughout a notice printed at the foot of the last page of the first issue suggests the journal had a broader platform. 'The publication of "The Pioneer" is undertaken solely with a view to stimulate thought and promote discussion and if approved of it is hoped will find the ready support of all Friends of Reform. The labor involved is given voluntarily and gratuitously; any profits made will go entirely towards extending its range of operations.' The journal ran for 57 issues ceasing publication with Volume V Number 5 24 December 1892. Provenance: Arthur W. Piper 1865-1936 a South Australian Supreme Court judge with his small name-stamp and personal library number 677 on the front pastedown. Printed for the Proprietor and Publisher, A. Timmann, at the 'Pioneer' Office hardcover
