It is thought that the very embarassing nature of its content particularly the criticism levelled at leader David Lindsay by the scientific members of the expedition prevented it' publisher's introduction. Lindsay's decisions as leader were exonerated by the report. The last seven pages reprint an article from the Adelaide Register of 6 November 1894 'The Elder Expedition. Why it was abandoned. The first map of Australia by Nicholas Vallards, 1547, is reproduced on plate V of Calvert's "Discovery of Australia." This facsimile of the famous original was made by J. M'Gahey, Lithographer of Chester, for Sir Thomas Philips in 1860. The north of the map is at its foot. If the map is turned upside down and the region depicted is compared with the corresponding region of the World Map of Jean Rotz, it will be seen that the coastline is identical in shape in the two maps, and from the position of India, far-Eastern Asia and the East Indian islands as shewn in the World Map, it will be obvious that the present map depicts the northern and eastern shores of the Australian continent.
