1871réf. 49789Philadelphia: Altemus & Co 1871. Very Good-. Philadelphia: Altemus & Co. ca. 1871. Thick quarto photo album 25cm; full custom embossed brown goat with steel and faux pearl decorative elements owner's name Smith M. Weed to upper cover in gilt steel clasps one missing all edges gilt; title page printed in gilt followed by 25ll. stiff card stock to which are mounted a hundred and ninety-eight 198 cartes de visite some captioned in ink many signed by the subject and others still identified as "dead" in pencil. Leather rubbed and worn at corners with loss at spine head all but two of the photographic windows filled; overall About Very Good images all in bright and near fine condition. Photo album of the New York lawyer and politician Smith M. Weed 1833-1920 who served on the New York State Assembly from 1865 to 1867 in 1871 and from 1873 to 1874. This album probably dates from 1871 one of the years Smith served on the Assembly that coincided with John T. Hoffman the first man pictured here serving as governor of New York. It is perhaps significant that Weed does not identify Hoffman by name but simply lists him as the Governor of New York--Hoffman was implicated as being part of the Tammany Hall Tweed Ring against which Weed was an outspoken critic. His report in favor of repealing the Erie Classification Act came within a vote of breaking up the Tweed and Erie Rings for which he was "regarded as an enemy of the then party-controlling influence. He was brutally assaulted by the notorious James Irving then a power with the 'Ring'" Life Sketches of Government Officers of Members of the Legislature of the State of New York 1873. Perhaps needless to say but still disappointing that Irving's signed CDV is not among those present here. As well as members of the Legislature there are also CDVs of men in its orbit including the Canal Commissioner two prison inspectors the governor's private secretary the head doorkeeper and the assistant doorkeeper and three reporters for the New York Sun the Associate Press and the Argus. An interesting photographic record of New York state politics in the era of the Tweed Ring. Altemus & Co unknown

The majority of the grievances were directed at the authoritarian regime of Lord Dalhousie as governor of Lower Canada and Governor-in-Chief of British North America 1820-28 when he was recalled. Included are grievances relating to Dalhousies establishment of a new Quebec Gazette his censure of Sir Francis Burton for having sanctioned a Bill of Supply his dismissal of militia officers and exercise of intimidation during elections his dismissal of justices of the peace and the unfair manner of jury selection. "Among other things the Montreal petitioners complained that contrary to the laws of England juries both grand and petty and both King's Bench and Quarter Sessions were being drawn exclusively from the town of Montreal rather than from the district at large. The committee chaired by Denis-Benjamin Viger concluded that this practice of jurors being "selected or as it were packed - summoned exclusively from among the inhabitants of a particular place or from a particular class - cannot be more compatible with liberty than it is with the rules of impartial justice. It is repugnant to every principle of our government and can only tend to the overthrow of the constitution of the country .The executive's control over the process of selecting juries became for the Patriotes yet another symbol of despotism and of the attempted exclusion of canadiens from their democratic rights given that they predominated in the countryside; a number of highly political jury trials for libel and sedition did nothing to help matters. The controversy only began to die down from 1830 when James Kempt ordered that jurors be drawn from the body of the district; the denouement came in 1832 when the legislature adopted a law regulating the qualification and selection of jurors " Donald Fyson Grand Juries Political Power And Citizenship In Quebec And Lower Canada 1764-1830 a paper for the 77th annual meeting of the Canadian Historical Association Ottawa May 1998TPL 1549. 1791réf. 6000066Tours: Auguste Vauquer Imprimeur du Département d'Indre & Loire 1791. Quarto 4 pp. woodblock ornament and drop title; fine and uncut preserved in modern marbled wrappers. The National Assembly decree calling for the publication of all accounts and charts of the La Pérouse expedition. In this second of two La Pérouse decrees of 1791 the government commits to the publication of the maps and narrative for the official account of the voyage. The publication would be six years in the making first appearing in 1797 as Voyage de la Pérouse autour du Monde and would come to be regarded as one of the greatest narratives of maritime exploration ever published. This decree too is printed at the start of the official voyage account. The text of the decree makes special reference to La Pérouse's Australian landing and copious correspondence relayed to France throughout the voyage 'envoyées par M. la Peyrouse de la partie de son voyage jusqu'à Botanibay.'; famously La Pérouse's last report was forwarded by Governor Phillip from Port Jackson. Three different imprints have been recorded for publication of this decree-- Paris and Grenoble versions have been described as well as the present issue from Tours. The Paris issue is held by two Australian libraries State Library of New South Wales and the National Library and it is recorded by several bibliographers Allen's Check List p. 10; McLaren 134; Ferguson 107 and also appears in the exhibition catalogue Centenaire de la mort de Lapérouse Paris 1888; number 48. However the Tours and Grenoble imprints are both scarcer and have escaped notice by the bibliographers mentioned. This example has a manuscript certification dated 24 June 1791 for the district of Tours. . Auguste Vauquer, Imprimeur du Département d'Indre & Loire unknown

1944réf. 211521944. Japanese American incarceration photographs dating from World War II document civilian life and military presence at several internment and assembly centers established after the forced removal of Japanese Americans from the West Coast. Following Executive Order 9066 in 1942 more than 120000 people of Japanese ancestry were confined in temporary assembly centers and longer term relocation camps administered by the War Relocation Authority. The photographs record daily activities of men women and children within these camps and illustrate the physical environment of the barracks settlements created to house incarcerated civilians during the war. Archive contains six original silver gelatin photographs measuring approximately 2.5 × 2.75 inches to 3.5 × 5.75 inches. The images depict Japanese American families and individuals at Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming Camp Amache in Granada Colorado and Pomona Assembly Center in California. Several photographs show families gathered in front of barracks style housing units typical of the camps. One image from Amache shows a family of six standing on the steps of their assigned unit with the wooden barracks structure visible behind them. Another photograph from Pomona shows two United States soldiers seated on a storage trunk outside a camp building likely serving as patrol or security personnel. One image from Heart Mountain shows a military medic standing beside an ambulance truck while gesturing toward camp structures in the distance. Other photographs include a group portrait of Japanese American young men standing in front of a brick building possibly a school building within the camp and a separate image of the same individual standing beside a lake. Another photograph shows a young Japanese American girl playing on a see saw while families watch a sports game in the background with camp buildings visible beyond the field. Pomona Assembly Center served as one of the temporary detention facilities established in 1942 before incarcerated families were transferred to permanent camps such as Heart Mountain. Heart Mountain became the fourth largest relocation center eventually housing nearly fourteen thousand people while Amache in Colorado confined more than seven thousand internees the majority of whom were American citizens by birth. Living quarters in these camps consisted of small rooms within hastily constructed wooden barracks assigned to individual families. The photographs preserve small moments of social life and recreation within these confined communities illustrating how families attempted to maintain routines despite the conditions of incarceration. Photographs remain clear and well preserved with light age wear consistent with vernacular prints. Very good condition overall and a revealing visual record of Japanese American life within wartime relocation centers. unknown

réf. elala6217Toronto: M.Reynolds Printer to the Hon. the House of Assembly 1835. First Edition of this famous report an eloquent and forceful indictment of the Family Compact Government largely written by Scottish-Canadian journalist and politician William Lyon Mackenzie who chaired the committee. The grievances of the Reformers are listed in detail: concern regarding the excessive power of the executive branch in Upper Canada and the campaigning of government officials for Tory politicians during elections criticism of companies like the Welland Canal Company that mismanaged funds given to them by the government and the salaries of officials who received patronage appointments. Demands are made for an elective legislative council and responsible government. A landmark document in the political history of Upper Canada. Mackenzie represented York County in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada and was elected the first mayor of Toronto in 1834. He led the rebels in the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837 and after its defeat he unsuccessfully rallied American support for an invasion of Upper Canada as part of the Patriot War against British imperialism. Interestingly this is a signed presentation copy given the year of publication by lawyer politician and later judge Archibald McLean who was a rising member of the Family Compact. As a colonel of the militia during the 1837 rebellion he was involved in routing the rebels in Toronto commanding the left flank of the loyalist forces under Colonel James Fitzgibbon in the attack on Montgomery’s Tavern.
