1790réf. 3657Saint-Marc 1790. Manuscript on paper. 1 leaf written in a clear secretarial hand on both sides signed by Bacon La Chevalerie Hanus de Jumécourt Valentin de Cullion de Bourcel Vincendon Dutour and Guerin secretary. Light toning horizontal fold mark small crease at upper left corner. Otherwise clean and well preserved in fine condition. Manuscript on paper. 1 leaf written in a clear secretarial hand on both sides signed by Bacon La Chevalerie Hanus de Jumécourt Valentin de Cullion de Bourcel Vincendon Dutour and Guerin secretary. 2 pp. Signed manuscript document from the escalating confrontation between the colonial Assembly of Saint-Marc and the royal governor. The text records the resolution adopted by the Assemblée Générale de la Partie Française de Saint-Domingue during its session of 24 April 1790 following the reading of a letter sent two days earlier by Governor Louis Antoine de Thomassin comte de Peynier condemning the Assembly’s recent acts and asserting the supremacy of royal authority. The deputies declared the letter “the delirium of despotism and pride” while acknowledging Peynier’s personal virtues. Their decree invites him to appear before the Assembly “to make known his principles and his true opinion” appointing Caradeux et Caradeux de la Cayes to deliver this summons—members of the prominent planter family active in colonial politics cf. Généalogie et Histoire de la Caraïbe 2025 art. 63—and warning that his refusal might compel them to take “disagreeable measures.” Finally the Assembly resolves that the Governor-General shall occupy within it the same position as the King’s ministers in the National Assembly—an explicit limitation of his authority. Signed by several key figures of the early Saint-Domingue revolution: Bacon de La Chevalerie 1731–1821 president of the first provincial assembly of the northern part of the colony and later leader of the faction des Léopardins; Charles-Arnould-Ignace Hanus de Jumécourt 1749–1798 former artillery officer and mayor of La Croix-des-Bouquets; Valentin de Cullion 1734–1821 lawyer and planter later author of Examen de l’esclavage en général… Paris 1802; Louis-Nicolas-Antoine de Bourcel b. 1754 conseiller du roi and procureur général at the Conseil Supérieur du Port-au-Prince; and Étienne-Guillaume Vincendon-Dutour avocat at the Conseil Supérieur de Saint-Domingue and later president of the Western Provincial Committee who emigrated to the United States in 1798. The document reflects the mounting tension between the Assembly and the Governor in the spring of 1790—an assertion of colonial autonomy that foreshadowed Peynier’s decision to disperse the deputies by force during the night of 29–30 July 1790. . unknown
1765réf. AQ21341A Paris: De l'Imprimerie de Guilleaume Desprez 1765. 92pp. Uncut stitched as issued. Edges a trifle dusty else clean and crisp. A printing of extracts from the minutes of the Assembly of the French clergy in 1765 a meeting most notable for reiterating the episcopacy's defence of it's exemption from taxation; a statement that from a Jansenist perspective amounted to a revocation of the Declaration of 1682 which had codified the principles of Gallicanism. The tensions bolstered by this corruption of Gallicanist fundamentals together with increased opposition to monarchical absolutism would pave the road to the Revolution - an ultimately the nationalisation of all ecclesiastical property. . 8vo. 1836réf. 9235Annapolis MD: William M'Neir 1836. Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 77 3 pp. First edition. In contemporary plain wrappers. Wrappers are detached and chipped; contents are generally foxed; small and early institutional stamp in the bottom margin of one page deep in the pamphlet; minor crease throughout the pamphlet from a vertical fold; dog-eared pages. Quite a presentable copy of a scarce publication on the Baltimore Bank Riots of 1835 which grew out of the failure of the Bank of Maryland. There was a belief that its impending bankruptcy was anticipated by its officers leading to civil unrest. The issues at trial were whether Baltimore officials had reacted appropriately and adequately when unrest began and rioting actually broke out. This pamphlet gives numerous depositions as to events in the city during this extended period of civil violence. American Imprints identifies another issue of this with slight differences to the title page that was issued the same year. Despite there being two issues it remains remarkably rare in commerce. Henkels offered it in 1915; beyond this there are no other auctions or offerings noted by the usual sources. OCLC locates barely a dozen copies of both issues together. American Imprints 38812. 1867réf. BK0152Barbados: Office of "The Official Gazette" No. 14 Broad Street 1867. 30 pp. with unnumbered index 42 pp. Half leather over cloth boards. Ink ownership inscription "W. Brandford Griffith / 1869" on a preliminary blank. Scattered foxing and light toning. A locally printed manual for the Barbados House of Assembly with the ownership inscription of William Brandford Griffith then both a member of the Assembly and the island's auditor-general. Griffith served in the Assembly from 1861 to 1874 and was appointed auditor-general in 1863; he subsequently held several other colonial offices before becoming governor of the Gold Coast in 1885. The rules numbered through 271 and accompanied by an extensive alphabetical index set out the conduct of the Assembly's public business. The index includes procedures for issuing election writs and returning the names of elected members to the governor and council together with the course to be followed when writs had not been executed. Although published well after emancipation these rules governed an Assembly whose electorate remained restricted by property qualifications. Free men of color had gained voting rights subject to those qualifications in 1831 and Samuel Jackman Prescod entered the Assembly in 1843. Planters and merchants nevertheless continued to dominate both the Assembly and the Legislative Council during the period in which Griffith served. OCLC records the 1867 edition OCLC 823344433 but we have been unable to identify a current institutional holding. . Office of "The Official Gazette," No. 14, Broad Street unknown
