1853ref. 65916Benicia CA. August 29 1853. Nathaniel Lyon Writes During California Frontier Duty A brief but warm autograph letter by Nathaniel Lyon a controversial figure most remembered as the first Union general to be killed during the Civil War written during his posting on the California frontier in the early 1850s. Lyon 1818–61 was a Connecticut native and a graduate of West Point. He fought in the Seminole Wars and with most distinction in the Mexican-American War during which he was promoted to Captain. After the war he was posted to the frontier where his violent temper and reputation for harsh punishment extended beyond his subordinates most notably in the case of the Bloody Island Massacre of 1850 where Lyon's unit killed more than 200 Pomo tribe civilians in retaliation for a violent robbery. In 1854 he was dispatched to Kansas where he viewed the violent internecine conflict over the slavery question first-hand. A Free-Soil man if not an abolitionist his experiences there solidified his hatred of the pro-slavery faction. In May of 1861 he was made a Brigadier General of volunteers while stationed in Missouri and organized pre-emptive attacks against Confederate sympathizers in the nominally neutral state. His campaign culminated in the Battle of Wilson's Creek where he was killed in battle and inflamed the public spirit as a martyr to the Union cause. In this letter Lyon writes to a George Work of San Francisco apparently a close friend by the tone. He is being sent to the Rogue River region to protect American interests in the ongoing conflict with Indigenous tribes which had been growing steadily deadlier since the Gold Rush and would soon come to a head in the Rogue River War of 1855–56. It reads in full: "Dear Work We have just received orders to go up to the rogue River country where are the Indian difficulties of which you have seen some accounts in the papers within the past few days. We shall leave this place this evening by the Sacramento Steamers and go as far as possible by water. When we may return or whether at all is uncertain—should we be gone long I shall hope to hear from you—anything addressed to me at 'Fort Reading' will reach me. Please see Brown and Eddy and say my respects to them and bid them a 'good by' for me. I will write to you as opportunity offers. Yours Truly N. Lyon." The recipient of the letter is unclear but it is likely one of two equally ill-fated men. One George Work would be the first sheriff of Tuolumne County who served in that role from 1850 to 1852. The early days of Tuolumne County were as rough-and-tumble as they come and its first sheriff did his best to impose order on a landscape of outlaws and mob justice. True to form Work was killed in a shootout at a saloon in 1854. The other George Work was a fellow Connecticut resident of an age with Lyon. He was a former schoolteacher turned wealthy merchant at the start of the Civil War but in 1864 volunteered for the navy where he was assigned a post as assistant paymaster on the USS Tecumseh. He was on board that ship when a torpedo sank it in the Battle of Mobile Bay and his remains were never retrieved. We know that Lyons corresponded with the latter George Work as late as 1859 when he wrote to him regarding the constitutional crisis in Kansas though it is not clear whether Work ever visited San Francisco. The envelope that accompanies this letter is addressed to George Work at San Francisco and postmarked June 11 at Benicia and likely contained a different letter from Lyon to Work. An autograph letter from one of the Union's most remembered generals penned during his controversial tenure on the California frontier. Old folds light staining. Very good. unknown books
1808ref. 53061Philadelphia. 1808. An important case relating to the robbery of the Bank of Pennsylvania in 1798. Robbers entered the bank in early September 1798 during one of the periodic outbreaks of Yellow Fever in Philadelphia. Because no evidence of forcible entry was detected suspicion immediately fell on blacksmith Patrick Lyon a British mechanic who had fashioned various iron fittings for the bank building including the locks. He claimed to have been out of town with his son to avoid the fever when the robbery took place but he was nonetheless arrested and imprisoned. The case was a city sensation and the press took up Lyon's cause which eventually led to his being freed. This work reports the trial of the president of the bank a cashier one of the bank directors who was also an alderman of Philadelphia and a high constable who were all sued for damages by Lyon on the charge of false imprisonment. The officers of the bank were sentenced to pay Patrick Lyon $12000 for false and malicious prosecution without reasonable cause. From the library of Professor George M Foster. Sabin:42852; Hill page 186 1st edition. G F Lyon was an English traveler born in Chichester England in 1795; died at sea in October 1832. He entered the British naval service in 1809 was present at the attack on Algiers by Lord Exmouth in 1816 and in 1818 was commissioned to accompany Joseph Ritchie on his tour of exploration into central Africa. Ritchie died in Fezzan and Lyon returned to England after encountering many dangers and privations which he described in his Narrative of Travels in Northern Africa London 1821. In 1821 in command of the Hecla he accompanied Captain William E. Parry on his arctic expedition publishing on his return The Private Journal of Captain G. F. Lyon 1824. In 1824 he sailed in command of the Griper' with the mission of exploring Melville peninsula and following its western shore as far as Turn-again he found after three months' searching a passage through the group of islets called Southampton island but was unable to enter Repulse bay through Sir Thomas Rowe's Welcome. On 13 September a violent tempest compelled him to return to England. The story of the voyage was told in A Brief Narrative of an Unsuccessful Attempt 1825. He subsequently passed several years in Mexico and died on his return from a second visit to America. His remaining works are The SketchBook of Captain G. F. Lyon during Eighteen Months' Residence in Mexico No. 1 London 1827 and Journal of a Residence and Tour in Mexico in 1828 London 1828. Lyon's enclosed letter states "I've marked some pages which I think makes a good progression over the years showing a change in subject and style. For the most part I have also marked pictures that are less well known and often have only appeared in print in this book. Nothing was run by any magazines when the hard back was printed. P.S. I'll need this particular copy back when you're done as it is my own; though I'm sure I can get you another from Aperture" December 17 1982. This copy features around a dozen pages with pencilled layout drawings and instructions and over a dozen pages marked with Lyon's original paper clips and sticky tabs. Danny Lyon was a twentieth-century photographic luminary who released Pictures from the New World in 1981 on the dynamic work of his past eighteen years. In the introduction he writes "In order to to make this book I have had to face directly everything I have done in photography. Now I give it back to you America from whom I took it all in the first place. The slate is clean and I am free to begin again." "Among a group of revolutionaries whose work rose to prominence in the late 1960s and '70s and transformed the nature of documentary photography - a group that includes friends and colleagues of Mr. Lyon's like Mary Ellen Mark and Larry Clark - the idea of conscience has been imbedded more deeply in Mr. Lyon's photographs than in those of all but a few of his contemporaries" The New York Times April 24 2009. The Focal Encyclopedia of Photography recounts"He was self-taught as a photographer and his first images document the social struggle. It was a pattern to be repeated throughout his career - to actively live with subgroups or participate with segments of society he would document. He became a member of a Chicago motorcycle gang The Outlaws before producing the book The Bike Riders in 1968. Later he spent time with construction workers stock care races prison inmates and peoples of the Third World to make his books and films" pg. 268. Millertown NY: Aperture 1981.
