ref. 948796; 94; 101; 84 folding leaves. Four vols. Large 8vo orig. wrappers orig. stitching. Guangzhou: Guangya shuju 廣雅書局 1895. Early — possibly the first — printed edition of a work on the state rites of the Jurchen Jin dynasty probably written in the late 12th century. The Jurchens ruled northern China under the name of Jin from 1115 to 1234. They were a people from present-day northeast China who spoke a Tungusic language related to Manchu. The Jurchen had their own institutions but also adopted many aspects of Chinese rulership. This book outlines ceremonies and events at the Jurchen Jin court. The book is of unknown authorship and date. Qing scholar Weng Fanggang ç¿æ–¹ç¶± 1733-1818 wrote that “the book contains mentions of events dated Dading 7 1167 11 1171 19 1179 and 27 1187…the book was thus probably completed toward the end of the Dading reign period i.e. before 1190” Weng Weng Fanggang zuan Siku tiyao gao 409. One theory holds that the book is in fact what Minister of the Board of Rites Zhang Wei å¼µæš presented to the Jin throne in 1195 under the title Da Jin liyi 大金禮儀 Rites of the Great Jin a title that is no longer extant Lao Zhonghua yeshi cidian 376. Our edition WorldCat 123342086 is preceded by the bibliographical summary written for its inclusion in Complete Books of the Four Repositories Siku quanshu 四庫全書 in the early 1780s. The publisher of our edition Guangya shuju was founded in Guangzhou in 1887 by Zhang Zhidong 張之洞 1837-1909 a prominent late-Qing conservative official and promoter of education largely through fundraising among fellow officials and local gentry. It had a sister institution in Guangya xueyuan 廣雅學院 the “Academy for Expanding What Is Good and Proper.” The vast majority of the titles put out by the publisher were historiographical works like our book. The publisher was extremely exacting and precise in its collation of books. Every title was without exception collated three times and at the end of every juan the names of the three collators were listed in order to demonstrate this careful and strict approach. Furthermore at the end of some books the editors added a colophon explaining the book’s provenance extant editions and their circulation the collation process and any lacunae with great benefit for the reader. Li Qingdai Guangdong buxue yanjiu 119. Our book has one of these colophons written by Liao Tingxiang 1842-97 a professor at the academy and a classical scholar who was one of the collators. Liao explains that the editors had worked from manuscript versions. A record of textual variants has been added by Miao Quansun 繆èƒå« 1844-1919 who had been a member of Zhang Zhidong’s secretarial staff and worked at the publishing house. Our copy has a seal saying that the book was “donated by Guangdong Commissioner of Education Shen Zengtong æ²ˆæ›¾æ¡ 1850-1921.” Shen was a late Qing official who served both at court and in the staff of Li Hongzhang æŽé¸¿ç« 1853-1901 one of the leading statesmen of the era. 1963ref. BK0076Atlanta Georgia: Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee 1963. Original illustrated poster approximately 14 x 22 inches printed in black and white by Lincoln Lithograph Company with photograph by Danny Lyon and SNCC's Atlanta address at 8 ½ Raymond Street N.W. Some edge wear and small losses at corners with scattered surface wear; overall a strong well-preserved example very good minus with toning. One of the best-known posters produced by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee pairing the slogan "One Man One Vote" with Danny Lyon's photograph of a Black Southern farmer seated outside his home. Lyon joined SNCC in the early 1960s and became the organization's first staff photographer producing images that were used in posters pamphlets and other publications documenting its organizing campaigns. The Seattle Public Library dates the poster to 1963 and notes that SNCC used the slogan in its Southern voter-registration work; the Smithsonian dates surviving examples to 1963-65.12 At the time voting rights had become central to SNCC's work in Mississippi and elsewhere in the South. Rather than depicting a march or confrontation Lyon's image places the emphasis on an individual prospective voter with the large typographic slogan occupying nearly half the upper field. The photograph and Lyon's credit appear directly in the design while the printer's imprint and union bug appear along the lower margin. Institutional examples are held by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and the Seattle Public Library. 1 Seattle Public Library "'One Man One Vote' poster ca. 1963" accessed October 6 2026 https://spl.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p16118coll37/id/1079/. 2 Smithsonian National Museum of American History "One Man One Vote" accessed October 6 2026 https://www.si.edu/object/nmah_1160327. . 1925ref. 536421925. Folio. Eight pages approximately 2750 words; accompanied by another autograph letter from Russell to Trowbridge 14 March 1925; 4to four pages approximately 750 words with more information on the political situation in Missouri on the eve of war and an autograph transcription by Russell of the long poem "The Battle of Wilson's Creek August 10 1861" folio two pages with his own commentary on the poem. Folded. Insect damage to the poem and first leaf of the longer letter resulting in the loss of a number of letters but quite legible throughout. 813. Russell a native of St. Louis enlisted under Lincoln's first call for troops and served in a Missouri regiment through the summer of 1864. Following an outline of sectional struggle from 1820 and early events of the war given in the first half of the longer letter Russell describes the events of the Wilson's Creek Campaign and then his own eyewitness to history: "The Kansas boys like ourselves were resting when all at once the rebels crept up the hill to the top of the crest opened a tremendous fire right into the Iowa boys and our regiment but we went at them anyway and a hand to hand struggle began . My Captain Cary Gratz was killed . I was wounded four times and the Kansas boys were holding their own. Capt. Lyon had been hit twice once a scratch along the forehead and a light superficial wound in the knee. I was carried down the hill and placed on the hill side opposite the line of battle the valley being merely a hollow. I had a good view of the fight as it went on. My first attention was attracted to my right as I lay there and watched Capt. Lyon trying to rally the Iowa boys who were in a panic their Colonel had been killed and although the Kansas boys had saved them Capt. Lyon was rallying them into formation to use as they were then near the front. All at once I saw him rear off that dople sic gray horse and fall to the ground. Maj. Schofield also ran to his side a messenger sent for our surgeon Dr. Comyns . Capt. Lyon was carried down the hill he was shot nearly half way up from the hollow to the battle lines. The bullet had struck him squarely in the breast and had gone through his hear and he had lost the pleasure of seeing the victory his indomitable courage had won."_The Confederates commanded by Gen. Sterling Price made another assault following the death of Lyon but Samuel Sturgis rallied the Union troops and the Federal lines held. Sturgis then left the field toward Springfield and the Confederates did not pursue him. "The campaign marked the beginning of the war in Missouri and the trans-Mississippi. Afterward the Federal army withdrew to rolla Missouri leaving the Southerners in possession of most of the southwestern region of the state" "Encyclopedia of the Confederacy"._Lyon 1818-1861 a Connecticut native graduated from West Point in 1841 served in the Mexican War and on the western frontier most of the time to the eve of Civil War in "Bleeding Kansas" becoming involved in the political issue of slavery in the territories. Appointed brigadier general in May 1861 to command the Union forces in St. Louis he also led discussions with Confederate sympathizers on Missouri's position in the union; when compromise failed he launched his first military campaign which culminated in his death at Wilson's Creek. "The entire north mourned his death and he immediately became a national hero and martyr . his brilliant work had done much to hold Missouri for the Union" DAB. unknown books
