St. John Fisher 1469-1535 Bishop of Rochester from 1504 and simultaneously Chancellor of Cambridge University wrote against the Protestant heresies of Luther in Assertionis Lutheranae Confutatio 1523 and in the present work against the heresies of Johannes Oecolampadius Hussgen who had been the chief representative of the Protestant faction at the Baden Dispute of 1526. Bishop Fisher acted as principal advocate of Queen Catherine in the matter of her divorce. He refused the oaths of succession and supremacy refusing to recognize Henry VIII as head of the church; he was tried for treason and imprisoned; the bishop was named cardinal by Pope Paul III in May 1535 but this did not alter the outcome: Fisher was beheaded in June.
