Wikipedia: "The Paris Commune was a radical socialist and revolutionary government that ruled Paris from 18 March to 28 May 1871. Following the defeat of Emperor Napoleon III in September 1870 the French Second Empire swiftly collapsed. In its stead rose a Third Republic at war with Prussia which laid siege to Paris for four months. A hotbed of working-class radicalism France's capital was primarily defended during this time by the often politicized and radical troops of the National Guard rather than regular Army troops. In February 1871 Adolphe Thiers the new chief executive of the French national government signed an armistice with Prussia that disarmed the Army but not the National Guard. Soldiers of the Commune's National Guard killed two French army generals and the Commune refused to accept the authority of the French government. The regular French Army suppressed the Commune during "La semaine sanglante" "The Bloody Week" beginning on 21 May 1871. Debates over the policies and outcome of the Commune had significant influence on the ideas of Karl Marx who described it as an example of the "dictatorship of the proletariat Swan Sonnenschein unknown

Not exlibrary. Overall in VERY GOOD condition. The "Paris Commune" French: La Commune de Paris was a government that briefly ruled Paris from 18 March more formally from 26 March to 28 May 1871. It has been variously described as either Anarchist or Socialist in tenor depending on the ideology of the commenter. Karl Marx described it as a vindication of his Communist ideas while the anarchist Mikhail Bakunin countered that since it did not rely on a vanguard and did not seize the State or attempt to create a new revolutionary State it was actually anarchist. In a formal sense the Paris Commune of 1871 was simply the local authority council of a town or district French "commune" which exercised power in Paris for two months in the spring of 1871. But the conditions in which it was formed its controversial decrees and tortured end make it one of the more important political episodes of the time. . First Edition. Full Cloth. Printer's device on title page. Captivating history of the world's first socialist working class uprising. The workers of Paris joined by mutinous National Guardsmen seized the city and set about re-organising society in their own interests based on workers' councils. They could not hold out however when more troops retook the city and massacred 30000 workers in bloody revenge. The Paris Commune is often said to be the first example of working people taking power. For this reason it is a highly significant event. This study is complete with its folding map of Paris in 1871. Spine slightly sunned. Minor rubbing along edges. 198034 pages. "It is unusual to have assembled in a privately owned gallery such a large number of high quality pieces by the Group of Seven and their contemporaries. Also presented are Maurice Cullen and James Morrice, whose adaptation of Impressionist techniques to the painting of Canadian landscape opened up an avenue for the Group to create our country's first real art movement... Some of the works of this collection are of national treasure status; that is, they are amongst the best the artist produced and would be considered irreplaceable." - from Forward. Fourteen colour illustrations plus twenty-one in black and white. Somewhat above-average wear and soiling. Occasional markings to contents. Small chip from lower corner of back cover. Half-inch bit of adhesive inside front cover has lifted a few letters of text from title page. A sound copy overall. Book
