1867réf. List01217Boston Paris: J.P. Whitney 1867. First Edition Thus. . 8vo publisher’s green cloth 107 pp. Some tearing and fraying to boards particularly at head of spine text block excellent very good minus overall. Very Good. The scarce Paris Universal Exposition edition of J.P. Whitney’s early title on the silver mines of Colorado. Whitney a wealthy sportsman from Boston with investments in Colorado traveled as the sole commissioner from Colorado to the Paris Universal Exposition in an effort to entice foreign investment in the mining industry which was suffering from a poor reputation as the costs of extraction grew higher. Whitney had published this title in pamphlet form a year earlier. Whitney shipped his own collection of Colorado minerals to France where it was the most extensive of any of the North American regions to be displayed receiving a gold medal from Napoleon III. A new title on Colorado minerals Colorado in the United States of America: Schedule of Ores Contributed by Sundry Persons to the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867 With Some Information about the Region and its Resources. Whitney also brought with him copies of his pamphlet in a special hardcover edition which we offer here. This is the second example we find on the market. Whitney would gain great popularity in Colorado for his efforts which did much to improve its standing. J.P. Whitney unknown books

1783réf. 34310Paris. February 4 1783. Preliminary Treaty of England and France On January 20 1783 terms for a general armistice between England and France and Spain were reached two months after terms with the United States had been worked out. A general armistice was agreed upon for February 4. This supplement to the Royal Gazette was probably the first publication of the terms of the British-French agreement. The French advantage after Yorktown had been largely lost with De Grasse's defeat in the Caribbean in 1782 so the net effect was largely a return to status quo with Caribbean possessions of both sides restored. Furthermore England's claims to Newfoundland were maintained and mutual fishing rights off the Canadian coast were agreed upon. Quarto. Later marbled boards leather label. Near fine. Around Minerva are representations of the new country—on her right a field of Indian corn a stand of oaks and the outline of a town; at her feet a hoe a plow and a sickle; on her left a quadrant and a telescope a ship heading for shore and the sun completely risen above the cloud. 1958réf. 140949964Woodside NY: U.S. Music Inc 1958. First and only edition. Signed sheet music for an original novelty song co-written by chronicler of the paranormal Paris Flammonde inscribed on the verso to his boss New York radio host Long John Nebel. Nebel was a predecessor of Art Bell Alex Jones and George Noory who became heavily involved in the Flying Saucer Craze era of UFOlogy frequently having guests on his show whose outrageous claims amused and intrigued listeners. This song gently spoofs the conventions of the era: little green men Greenwich Village Beatnik lingo and mysterious alien seductresses. Appears to be one of very few copies ever produced; photostat of a handwritten manuscript with Flammonde's annotations in blue ink. Single sheet measuring 22x28" folded vertically down the middle no printing on verso but Flammonde's inscription in ink. Rare as a non-blurry photo of a UFO with absolute zero copies found in OCLC none at auction or in the trade. U.S. Music, Inc unknown books

These books can be problematic in that the three-ring binder format allowed for the inclusion of periodic updates. A priced copy of the Paris edition of this famous sale; an English edition appeared the next year. For a fascinating account of this catalogue and sale which caused traffic jams along Pall Mall see Arthur Rau’s “Bibliotheca Parisina” in The Book Collector Autumn 1969 pp. 307-17. Amongst the buyers at this sale were Lord Spencer Douce Woodhull Cracherode and the Duke of Newcastle. Thanks to the recent researches of Milton McC. Gatch “The Bibliotheca Parisina” in The Library Seventh Series Vol. 12 Number 2 June 2011 pp. 90-118 we finally know the identity of the consignor: Antoine Marie Pâris d’Illins 1746-1809 a military man who was forced to emigrate in 1792 because of conflicts with the Revolution. Rehabilitated by Napoleon Pâris d’Illins died as a general of the infantry during the Spanish campaigns at Cocana in 1809. See the entire article to learn more about the collector his library Edwards’s additions etc. We know that not all the books came from the one library; there were books from Loménie de Brienne masquerading under another provenance probably for political reasons and Aldines which Edwards must have obtained in Italy. Nevertheless this is one of the great sales of the period. Very good copy. The Paris edition is far rarer than the English edition. 40335N.p. but possibly Paris. ca.1875. A Rare Series of Plates of Maritime Life on the Senegal Coast A volume of engravings depicting the voyage of the ship Bellone and seafaring life. Following the "title" plate which is numbered 21 are scenes of Africa primarily in Senegal. These plates depict the natives villages and cities. After the scenes of Africa are plates depicting maritime life evidently on a French naval vessel in the Atlantic. These images are much more delicately engraved and are not numbered. The first few of these detail a "day in the life" of a sailor from morning muster and breakfast through scrubbing the deck and inspection and shore leave. Two plates of Uruguay and two unidentified landscapes are also inexplicably inserted in the midst of this sequence. An interesting and perhaps unique compilation of travel and maritime images. Forty engraved plates. Folio. Contemporary green half calf and marbled boards spine gilt. Spine faded. Lightly rubbed at extremities. Bookplate on front pastedown. First plate lightly age-toned. Some very minor scattered foxing else bright and clean internally. Very good. hardcover books
