First edition and very uncommon. This catalogue the splendid Han Fürstenberg — Otto Schäfer — Jacques Bemberg copy lists the plates made of the collections of the king including paintings medals royal chateaux fountains grottoes statues busts tapestries and jewels along with records of festivals entrances battles etc. etc. “Colbert understanding that engraving was the best means to disseminate and preserve knowledge of the undertakings of Louis XlV began to assemble a group of outstanding engravers. By 1660 they had achieved the stature of independent artists and by 1670 had become a special group under the protection of the king joined together at the Gobelins around Charles Le Brun and Sebastien Le Clerc. From 1660 André Félibien was charged with providing descriptions of maisons royales and Adam Van der Meulen and Israel Silvestre were sent to the newly conquered territories to make views of the principal chateaus and fortresses. Other commissions for the Cabinet du Roi included engravings by Chauveau of the king’s paintings at the Tuileries; copies of paintings and sculpture by Claude Mellan Rousselet and Audran in the galleries of the king; copies by Ronelet of the king’s collection of medals; and other works of art and architecture by Rousselet Silvestre Chauveau and Le Clerc. At the same time the Académie des Sciences began scholarly works commissioned by Colbert…Illustrators for these works were Abraham Bosse Sebastien Le Clerc who often made engravings for Claude Perrault Nicolas Bailly and L. de Châtillon… “From 1670 Colbert determined to join these engravings in a collection. He proposed that at the end of each year a temporary volume would be composed of all types of works with the text printed in French and Latin. At the end of ten or twelve years the collection would be subdivided by topics so that the king would have volumes separated into all the sciences and achievements of his reign… “A complete record of the king’s possessions was never achieved but the plan was continued by his successors. The engravings from the Cabinet du Roi were first published in a variety of sizes and separately. They were then collected into volumes according to Colbert’s plan but sporadically. In 1727 a new edition was published with additional plates and a catalogue. A third edition of twenty-three volumes with further additions and an index was issued in 1743. Later sets were formed with plates from various editions. The plates survive to the present day at the Chalcographie du Louvre.”–Millard French Books 46. This catalogue was issued as a guide to the contents of the fifty sets of 956 plates of the 1743 edition which were prepared as gifts see Balayé La Bibliothèque Nationale des origines à 1800 pp. 226-27. "Despite the opinion of those who dream of "pure art" and despite its mechanical and industrial character typography give daily evidence of its close connection with present day developments in the plastic arts and shows its dependence on them by reflecting the various tendencies which arise. More than any other form of graphic design indeed typography today plays the part of a gauge of the general aesthetic level and mirrors the culture on which it is based. It is only necessary to glance at the typography of a country to get a fairly accurate idea of the degree of aesthetic and intellectual development reached there." Berlewi. Ownership copy of Civil War surgeon Dr. James V. Kendall with his signature and address of Baldwinsville NY and the date each volume was purchased on the flyleaf of both volumes. Pasted into the second fly of the Volume I is a two-page ANS on chateau letterhead dated 12.8.85 from le Comte de Paris the author to Dr. Kendall in English in which le Comte acknowledges Kendall's laudatory letter and comments that he "has brought this work to about two thirds completion' anticipating "there will be ten in the French and five in the American edition' and regretting "unfortunately I can devote but little time to this great work". Prince Philippe of Orléans Count of Paris Louis Philippe Albert 1838 -1894 was disputedly King of the French from 24 to 26 February 1848 as Louis Philippe II although he was never officially proclaimed as such. He was the grandson of Louis Philippe I King of the French. A historian journalist and outspoken democrat Philippe volunteered to serve as a Union Army officer in the American Civil War along with his younger brother Prince Robert Duke of Chartres. He was appointed as an assistant adjutant general with the rank of captain on 24 September 1861 and served under the name of Philippe d'Orléans the Count of Paris. He served on the staff of the commander of the Army of the Potomac Major General George B. McClellan for nearly a year. He distinguished himself during the unsuccessful Peninsular Campaign. He resigned from the Union Army along with his brother on 15 July 1862. Philippe's History of the Civil War in America is considered a standard reference work on the subject. Source: Wikipedia. Best.-Nr. 28142 p.l. 192 pp. one leaf of errata. 8vo cont. calf joints nicely repaired flat spine gilt contrasting leather lettering piece on spine. London: Edwards; Paris: Laurent 1790. A priced copy of the Paris edition of this famous sale; an English edition appeared the next year. For a fascinating account of this catalogue and sale which caused traffic jams along Pall Mall see Arthur Rau’s “Bibliotheca Parisina” in The Book Collector Autumn 1969 pp. 307-17. Amongst the buyers at this sale were Lord Spencer Douce Woodhull Cracherode and the Duke of Newcastle. Thanks to the recent researches of Milton McC. Gatch “The Bibliotheca Parisina” in The Library Seventh Series Vol. 12 Number 2 June 2011 pp. 90-118 we finally know the identity of the consignor: Antoine Marie Pâris d’Illins 1746-1809 a military man who was forced to emigrate in 1792 because of conflicts with the Revolution. Rehabilitated by Napoleon Pâris d’Illins died as a general of the infantry during the Spanish campaigns at Cocana in 1809. See the entire article to learn more about the collector his library Edwards’s additions etc. We know that not all the books came from the one library; there were books from Loménie de Brienne masquerading under another provenance probably for political reasons and Aldines which Edwards must have obtained in Italy. Nevertheless this is one of the great sales of the period. Very good copy. The Paris edition is far rarer than the English edition. ⧠Gustave Brunet Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique cols. 579-80–“Ce catalogue est d’une richesse remarquable…De forts beaux ouvrages provenant de la bibliothèque du cardinal Loménie de Brienne avaient été joints à cette collection.” De Ricci p. 89.
