1885Best.-Nr. 140511885. Neurdein Frères Paris Opera circa 1887 to 1890 documents the Palais Garnier and the concentrated carriage and pedestrian traffic surrounding one of the principal public buildings of late nineteenth century Paris. Completed in 1875 the opera house stood within the rebuilt urban landscape of the Second Empire and early Third Republic while the traffic visible before its façade records the everyday movement of people and horse drawn vehicles through the surrounding streets. Albumen print approximately 8 x 11 inches mounted on paper. The view centers on the elaborately ornamented façade of the Palais Garnier with numerous horse drawn carriages and pedestrians filling the foreground and the square before the building. The "X Phot." mark identifies the image with Neurdein Frères who used the mark from 1887. The firm produced extensive photographic views of Paris for circulation as tourist and architectural images including monuments civic buildings streets and other recognizable features of the capital. The combination of monumental architecture and active street traffic preserves both the appearance of the Palais Garnier and the transportation patterns of Paris before the widespread replacement of horse drawn vehicles by motor traffic. Excellent condition. A sharp late nineteenth century view combining architectural documentation of the Paris Opera with closely observed evidence of everyday movement through the surrounding urban space. unknown books
1885Best.-Nr. 140501885. Neurdein Frères Place de la Concorde late nineteenth century records one of Paris's principal civic spaces during the period when the Neurdein photographic enterprise was producing views of French cities monuments and architecture for an expanding tourist market. Place de la Concorde carried several layers of French political history: renamed Place de la Révolution during the French Revolution and used for executions by guillotine it was subsequently reshaped as a monumental public square with the Luxor Obelisk erected at its center in 1836. By the later nineteenth century views of the square formed part of the photographic documentation and commercial circulation of modern Paris. Albumen print measuring 8 ½" x 11" mounted to a stiff light blue paper mount measuring 9 ½" x 12". The image presents a broad view of the Place de la Concorde in Paris preserving the appearance of the square and its surrounding urban setting in the nineteenth century. The lower portion of the print bears the photographer's mark "X Phot." The mark is associated with Neurdein Frères the Paris photographic firm established by Étienne Neurdein and Louis Antonin Neurdein. The firm increasingly concentrated on architectural monument and city views beginning in the 1870s; "X Phot." was among the commercial marks used for its photographic production during the later nineteenth century. The photograph belongs to the extensive nineteenth-century production of Paris views made for travelers and the international photographic market when albumen prints enabled images of the capital's monuments boulevards and public spaces to circulate well beyond France. Place de la Concorde occupied a particularly recognizable position within this visual geography connecting the Tuileries and Champs Élysées and retaining physical associations with both the French Revolution and the nineteenth-century reconstruction of Paris. Very clean with a few marks; very good condition. An early photographic record of Place de la Concorde associated with one of the principal commercial producers of architectural and urban views in nineteenth-century France. unknown books

Part B of Planetary Astronomy from the Renaissance to the Rise of Astrophysics continues the history of celestial mechanics and observational discovery through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It provides a synoptic view of the main developments and furnishes details about the lives ideas and interactions of the various astronomers involved. Twelve different authors have contributed their expertise to this book that begins with the reception of Newton's inverse-square law. In the remainder a large place is given to the development of the mathematical theory of celestial mechanics from Clairaut and Euler to LeVerrier Newcomb Hill and Poincare. This emphasis is balanced by other chapters on observational discoveries and the rapprochement of observation and theory for instance the discovery of Uranus and the asteroids use of Venus transits to refine solar parallax introduction of the method of least squares and the development of planetary and satellite ephemerides. Lists of "Further Reading" provide entry to the literature of the several topics. This book will be of great interest to historians of science and astronomers." TABLE OF CONTENTS: Part V. 1989Best.-Nr. 31038New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. First Edition. Hardcover. nice clean copy basically as-new but with the faintest bit of foxing to the top of the text block; the jacket is flawless but for a tiny wrinkle at the top edge of the rear panel. B&W photographs One of the best actress biographies you're ever likely to read the engrossing life story of a woman who somehow through a combination of chance fortuitious connections and her own force of character managed to become one of the enduring icons of cinema history despite a truncated and largely negligible film career. "What's all this talk about Louise Brooks" director George Cukor once famously ranted. "She was nobody! She was a nothing in films!" Well yes and no. The famous exception to a string of mostly minor roles in mostly obscure and largely-forgotten films was of course her luminous performance as "Lulu" in G.W. Pabst's "Pandora's Box" -- which in the long run proved to be her ticket to immortality. The story of the more than fifty years that passed between that film and her death however is a harrowing chronicle of alcoholism promiscuity near-povertyrage religion and rejection ending in her ultimate self-resurrection as a writer. A wonderful book. Signed sheet music for an original novelty song co-written by chronicler of the paranormal Paris Flammonde inscribed on the verso to his boss New York radio host Long John Nebel. Nebel was a predecessor of Art Bell Alex Jones and George Noory who became heavily involved in the Flying Saucer Craze era of UFOlogy frequently having guests on his show whose outrageous claims amused and intrigued listeners. This song gently spoofs the conventions of the era: little green men Greenwich Village Beatnik lingo and mysterious alien seductresses. Appears to be one of very few copies ever produced; photostat of a handwritten manuscript with Flammonde's annotations in blue ink. Single sheet measuring 22x28" folded vertically down the middle no printing on verso but Flammonde's inscription in ink. Best.-Nr. 4694Rare Photography Broadside for a Parisian photography studio operated by Allophones Lionel who was active in the 1860s according to Getty Images. Lionel advertises a guarantee that no photographer had offered: a proof - "epreuve" - of the image before the photograph is printed and if the client does not like the image the photographer will take a second photograph and offer a second proof for no additional charge. A caricature of the famed French photographer Nadar appears to sit on a camera in the broadside's highly decorative design. The sheet measures 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches and is normally aged with slight chip in upper left corner else very good condition. Photographs of individuals in the carte-de-vi site style established in the 1850's became more popular in the 1860's with many photographers competing for clients. This richly designed broadside must have appealed to new customers. We have not found another example of this broadside. "Photography Universal Du XIX Cecile" Paris ca 1860s. unknown books
