Holford C. of London dated Paris Jan. 30 1847 which appears to ask that the attached letter be forwarded to James Holford. Some age toning along edges. Pages are splitting along folds and edges are chipped some text affected with loss of a few letters here and there. Good. Berry was indebted to Holford; his letter explains his shaky state of affairs. James Holford's death was announced in the The Chicago Democratic Press in May 1854. A native of London he had been a large holder of Illinois Indiana and Arkansas State bonds when the public credit of those States became impaired. Holford claimed that the citizens of those States were obligated to make restitution to him. He wrote and published several letters upon this subject one of which was addressed to the Illinois Legislature at its 1850 session in which he urged them to apply the lands donated for the Central Railroad to the liquidation of the debt of Holford. He was said to have left behind an immense fortune. unknown

In like-new condition. "Given is Wendell Berry's first collection of new poems in ten years. As rich and varied as any before this book is divided into four parts. We begin with a collection of short occasional pieces ranging from political cautions to love poems and celebrations. Then follows a play in verse 'Sonata at Payne Hollow' a beautiful evocation of the lives of the painter Harlan Hubbard and his wife Anna. Over the past twenty-five years Mr. Berry has been at work on a long sequence of poems that has resulted from his Sunday morning walks of meditation and observation and this present volume concludes with eight year's worth of new 'Sabbath Poems.' For five decades Wendell Berry has been a poet of great clarity and purpose. He is a writer whose imagination is grounded by the pastures of his chosen place and the rooms and porches of his family's home. His work is one of devotion to family and community to the earth and her creatures to the memories of the past and the hope of the future. His work stands alongside WIlliam Carlos Williams and Robert Frost as a rigorous American testament."-from the front dust jacket flap. Shoemaker Hoard hardcover
