1881réf. 1055London 1881. Essays on the Most Important Affections of the Skin is a Victorian popular-medical treatise by S. Berry Niblett M.D. a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians issued here in its third edition. As the title indicates the book is a collection of essays on the principal diseases of the skin written for a general as well as a professional readership. The advertisement for the author's companion treatise on epilepsy offered "post free" for twelve stamps points to a book sold directly by the author a common practice among Victorian medical writers who combined publishing with private practice. The volume is of interest to collectors of Victorian medical literature historians of dermatology and those interested in how skin disease was presented to the public in the nineteenth century. The fact that it reached a third edition suggests it sold reasonably well in its day. Notable features are the gilt-stamped title and decorative blind-stamped ornamental borders on the front board and the printed advertisement for the author's other work. Condition & Binding: The book is bound in original brown publisher's cloth with a pebbled grained texture blind-stamped with ornamental scrollwork and a ruled border and lettered in gilt on the front board. The binding shows significant wear. The cloth is heavily rubbed and darkened the fore-edge side of the front board is frayed with loss of cloth and exposed backing material and loose threads are visible at the lower edge and corners. The gilt lettering is worn but legible. Internally the paper is evenly toned with a few small spots and the title page is clean and legible. Overall- fair to good. unknown
