Dai protagonisti della scena newyorkese a cavallo tra gli anni trenta e quaranta come Lester Young e Tallulah Bankhead, alle amiche d'infanzia come Mary "Pony" Rane, che condivise con Billie l'esperienza del riformatorio, al marito e manager Louis McKay, questi innumerevoli ricordi compongono il ritratto di una donna fragile ma al tempo stesso irresistibile, orgogliosa e travolgente. Sullo sfondo la discriminazione nella Baltimora degli anni venti, la New York degli speakeasy durante il proibizionismo, le fumerie di oppio, il Cotton Club, l'Apollo e gli altri locali di Harlem, i gangster e la caccia alle streghe da parte dell'FBi in un racconto corale che termina con una performance memorabile, davanti alle telecamere della CBS, poco prima della scomparsa di Lady Day.

The jazz club is still extant but in a different location: at the time this was at 1678 Broadway owned by Morris and Irving Levy and Oscar Goodstein. In 1965 the club moved because of rent increases. Although the club was named in honor of Charlie "Yardbird" Parker he rarely played there. It was considered the premier NYC jazz club of its time. This booklet gives information on the performers they had lined up for 1956: Sarah Vaughan Count Basie Al Hibbler Lester Young Johnny Smith Bud Powell Joe Williams plus the East/West Jazz Septet.
