Afro Rock which had its strongest incarnation in the UK in the late sixties and early seventies combined Western rock instrumentation with African and Afro-Cuban rhythms and percussion. Assagai featured emegrees from both South Africa and Nigeria as well a Ghana; the lineup included drummer Louis Moholo trumpeter/flautist Mongezi Feza alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana tenor saxophonist Bizo Mngqikana guitarist/bassist Fred Coker their chief songwriter and Terri Quaye - the first professional female congaist in the UK. Assagai issued just two highly-reguarded albums both in 1971 on Vertigo Records one of the few if not the only all-black band signed to that legendary rock label and this poster dates from that peak. While they broke up shortly after this gig the members went on to long careers in various other jazz and prog groups. A striking poster from this significant but poorly documented group. Rock 1884-1962 was "captivated by the ritual books he found in the possession of the Naxi religious specialists the 'dongba' while plant hunting in China's borderlands. Rock went on to devote the remaining years of his life to the translation of these books that contained such a treasure house of knowledge a corpus of literature that for Rock offered tantalising glimpses at the indigenous religion of pre-Buddhist Tibet. Rock a voracious autodidact appreciated an intellectual challenge: this was a script that by the time he first encountered it in the 1920s nobody had previously deciphered aside from some exploratory incomplete translations conducted via Chinese by French scholars and explorers. This vast corpus of ritual literature was essentially unexplored territory and this was where Rock liked to tread. Through his assiduous collecting and cataloguing and not without controversy he preserved thousands of these texts in collections now spread throughout the western world . While Rock's first published translations were no more than concise summaries of the stories he discovered within the Naxi manuscripts he later developed a more extensive anthropological style of translation. This meant recording in exacting detail the phonetic reading given by a dongba and then embarking upon a full written commentary. The first translation to use this method was published in 1937 as 'The birth and origin of Dto-mba Shilo the founder of Mo-so shamanism according to Mo-so manuscripts' a seminal work on Dobbaq-sheel'lo the mythical founding father of the dongba religion" see Poupard D.J. 1969réf. 55917New York: Vantage Press 1969. First edition. Very good plus in a very good jacket. Garrulously inscribed first edition of this scarce self-published first-person account of life on the road with the Chicago Outlaws. Unassuming factory worker George "Rock Conte" Mitchell falls in with the notorious Chicago Outlaws seemingly out of nothing but curiosity: "I had never met or encountered anything which split my imagination as this group did." He published this account with Vantage Press at his own expense reporting credulously and forgivingly on the gang "many of the stunts they pulled off just didn't seem to make any sense . I had seen only one member smoke marijuana" some of whom were also seen and heard from in Danny Lyon's THE BIKERIDERS. Inscribing the book six years after publication Conte echoes the also presumably self-penned jacket copy in comparing his mission to that of John Howard Griffin in BLACK LIKE ME but OUTLAWS FOREVER brought no publicity to the divide between the straight world and that of the riders. Perhaps because HELL'S ANGELS had already claimed it all for Hunter S. Thompson several years before. OCLC locates just six scattered holdings. 8'' x 5.5''. Original black cloth boards silver stamped spine. In original unclipped $4.50 pictorial jacket. 8 pages of black-and-white photographs. 216 pages. Inscribed to front free endpaper: "To / Rob & Sue: / I feel like 'John / Howard Griffin' author of / 'Black Like Me'. There is / always another side to a story. / Sometimes one may pay a / dear price & suffer but one / should never give up. / I wish the two of you the best of everything and hope / your dearest dreams come true. / Sincerely Your friend / Always / Rock Conte / 5-24th-75." Jacket lightly toned with minor soil and few small chips. Faint toning to text block. Bit of pushing to spine tail. Overall sound and clean. Vantage Press unknown books

Illustrated chromolithographic broadside with map 21.25” x 13.125” plus margins inset map measuring 4.5” x 5.875” illus. measuring 3.25” x 12.5”. CONDITION: Very good margin chipped at upper right corner a few minor stains. A rare and striking broadside issued by the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railway advertising the Rock Island through-express route and promoting the railroad’s numerous destinations connections and amenities. Featuring the eye-catching mix of typefaces and colors that characterized railroad advertising in this era this attractive broadside promotes the numerous midwestern stops and destinations accessible via the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific R’y. At this time two through-express trains for Kansas and Nebraska ran daily in connection with the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads. As noted here meals were served in palace dining cars for seventy-five cents each and 150 pounds of baggage were allowed on each full ticket and seventy-five pounds on each half ticket free. The line’s various destinations included Iowa City Council Bluffs Denver Salt Lake City and San Francisco as well as “all points in Kansas Nebraska Colorado Arizona New Mexico Utah Montana and California.” Showing the Rock Island R.R. in bold the inset map spans from Chicago and Lake Michigan in the east to Omaha and Council Bluffs in the west and reaches from St. Paul in the north to St. Louis and Kansas City in the south—with Lake Michigan lying in the upper-right corner. One axis of the line extends from Milwaukee and Racine Wisconsin to Leavenworth Kansas and another stretches from Chicago to Omaha. Various spurs connect to both. The lower section of the broadside features a marvelously detailed illustration of the interior of a palace dining car showing numerous fashionably dressed passengers seated and dining among African American waiters who are shown in the small kitchen and serving food. In the far-right end of the train men are depicted in drawing rooms—reading newspapers and smoking—and various railway operators and ticket-men appear at the ends of the car. Also included is a table of connections with various railroads that could be made in “Union depots.” Through-tickets via this route could be found on sale at all coupon offices in the U.S. and Canada. Those seeking additional information folders maps and times-tables are encouraged to contact any of the ten agents and managers of the Rock Island R.R. listed at the bottom who were based in New York Toronto Philadelphia Chicago etc. Established in 1847 as the Rock Island & LaSalle R.R. the company was reincorporated in 1851 as the Chicago & Rock Island R.R. Co.—its rails during this period reaching to Morris Illinois and later Ottawa. After acquiring the Mississippi & Missouri R.R. in 1866 the company was renamed Chicago Rock Island & Pacific R.R. Co. Expanding between 1873 and 1882 the company built more branch lines that reached into Iowa as well as Kansas City. In 1880 the firm was reorganized under the name Chicago Rock Island and Pacific R’y Co. and by 1883 extended nearly to the southern boundary of Kansas. After Congress granted passage across Indian Territory in 1887 the Rock Island R.R. began developing through Texas to Galveston as well as New Mexico Territory. During the 1920s the railroad enjoyed considerable success. In 1926 the company began constructing a freight line between Amarillo Texas and Liberal Kansas which was finished in 1929 and served to make accessible a country of rich grain. While the railroad industry continued fairly steadily through 1930 between 1931 and 1935 the Depression took a toll on the Rock Island R.R. and went into decline. The company ceased operation in 1980. OCLC records just one copy held at Yale. REFERENCES: “Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railway Records” at Kansas Historical Society online.
