Stapled. 185-232 pp. Profusely illustrated with drawings cartoons and caricatures by August Roeseler 1866-1934 Werner Zehme 1859-1924 and others. From the collection of the distinguished American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne b. 1934. Slightly worn and browned. This popular German periodical contained commentary of a humourous nature particularly relating to contemporary German theatre opera literature art and social mores. "Horne had a voice of extraordinary range rich and tangy in timbre with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top. In concert she once achieved the feat of singing in a single programme Rossini arias and Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene proof of her exceptional versatility. Throughout her lengthy career she was an admired recitalist singing lieder mélodies Spanish and American songs with equal aplomb." Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online. Braun & Schneider unknown books

With annotations in ink in Russian relative to various parts of the costume. 13.125" x 8.75" 332 x 222 mm. Slightly worn and soiled; some edge tears and repairs; upper right corner with erasure resulting in minor paper loss. Korovine designed costumes for productions of Russian operas including Borodin's Prince Igor Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina and Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko and Le Coq d'Or. "Konstantine Korovine is one of the most famous of Russia's twentieth-century stage designers. He made his debut as a theatrical painter in 1885 when he executed the sets and costumes for the production of Snegurochka at Savva Mamontov's Private Opera after Vasnetsov's designs and thereafter he emerged rapidly as an independent stage designer - decorating according to one souce 80 operas 37 ballets and 17 dramas during his lifetime. Korovine brought to the Russian stage a vibrancy and richness that was lacking in the traditional Imperial theaters. He felt more at ease when called upon to design operas and ballets treating of Russian history and legend such as Prince Igor Sadko and The Golden Cockerel and he designed sets and costumes for such spectacles at home and abroad." ref. 27931New York City: Metropolitan Opera Co. INSCRIBED by Ms Stevens. Faint dimple in lower left corner. Very Good. 9-7/8" x 8" "One of the great voices of the Metropolitan Opera New York-born mezzo-soprano Rise Stevens made her debut with the company in 1939 as Octavian in Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier". Her other notable roles in 21 years with the company included the two characterizations most associated with her the title role in Bizet's "Carmen" and Dalila in Saint-Saens's "Samson et Dalila." Furthermore Ms Stevens is known for literally saving the entire 1961 season. After the company had canceled its entire 1961-62 schedule due to stalled labor negotiations a persuasive telegram from Rise Stevens convinced President Kennedy to intervene and he ordered the Secretary of Labor to arbitrate the dispute. Just three weeks later the entire season was reinstated on schedule demonstrating notables such as President Kennedy were not immune to the entreaties of the Met's attractive reigning mezzo-soprano. A great beauty as well as a great singer she also enjoyed one of the more successful careers of the many opera singers who made films most notably in "The Chocolate Soldier" opposite Nelson Eddy and "Going My Way" with Bing Crosby & Barry Fitzgerald. She was also something of a fixture on early TV appearing frequently on such programs as "The Bell Telephone Hour" & "The Voice of Firestone" where she sang both operatic arias & popular songs. She also appeared on one of the first telecasts from the Met in 1954 singing her favored role of Carmen opposite one of her most frequent Don Joses Richard Tucker." IMDb.
