1773Best.-Nr. 4806Paris: Didot 1773. First Edition. Full contemporary calf. Very good bright; small early ownership stamp on title inoffensive. Large 4to xx 1 - 348 pp. 24 engraved folding plates. This work is a translation loosely based upon a report issued by the School of Mines in Freiburg in 1769. According to Monnet's statements in the introduction the book offered here is modelled on the Freiburg report and only includes material that he was able to confirm by visiting the sites mentioned. The book covers exploration for minerals development ventilation drainage there is a short note in the text concerning the use of a steam engine in Belgium to pump out water and the concentration of ores. Monnet eventually became France's first inspector of mines and appears to have been adept at maintaining his position through the tumultuous political changes in the country during the late 18th century. He was also identified as being a gifted chemist Macquer but did not leave his mark in that field. The associated field of mineralogy is where his presence was most recognized. He published widely and for a time was in the business of supplying collections of mineral samples accompanied by a printed catalogue the cost of these cabinet collections was 150 livres. A superb mining treatise beautifully illustrated with 24 engravings of machinery and plans that represent the latest in mining technology of the period. 1777Best.-Nr. 4896Copenhagen: Claude Philibert 1777. First Edition. Modern paper covered boards. . Very good bright copy with large margins. 4to 2 xvi 8 440 2 - errata 29 copper engraved folding plates and 6 folding tables; retaining the half title. It would be difficult to overestimate the impact of the Seven Years War on the governments and armies of Europe. The book offered here is part of the general reformulation of military theory and weapon development during this critical period. The French army had established an impressive reputation for its effective employment of artillery. In conjunction with new theoretical works like that of Folard or Guibert tactics and strategy of a modern army were recast. Accompanying this was a serious technical debate on the developments of modern artillery of all kinds. Scheel's book is a candid and very thorough inquiry into the manufacture and deployment of artillery and consideration of changes within the French army. The illustrations accompanying the text are detailed technical drawings for guns carriages shot etc. Claude Philibert hardcover books

Best.-Nr. 12934Austin: Civic Pride Inc. / Clarke Printing 1995. Color printed map on sturdy glossy paper 37.5 x 24 inches with the title sponsor and footer printed in embossed gold foil. Some short heavy creases and rubbing in image area moderate edge wear pinholes in corners. Still very good condition. An eye-catching poster map of Austin Texas in the fledgling years of its tech boom and a very obvious product of the 1990s. Apart from the 1996 calendar at the bottom the poster features rudimentary Photoshop elements and numerous dot-com bubble companies peppered among technology companies that survive to this day. The sponsor of the map is printed between the bottom of the map and the calendar Pro Fasteners and Components on Springdale Road. Austin's identity as "Silicon Hills" began around this period with local business groups hoping to replicate the economic vibrancy enjoyed by the Bay Area's Silicon Valley in earlier decades. The map identifies dozens of companies using an interesting mix of logos corporate headquarters and photographs of actual employees. Some of the imagery is amusing to a larger audience while other images would likely be recognizable strictly to a local audience. The geographic inaccuracies are waved away with a humorous note in the lower right: "Warning.Reality Bytes. So it has nothing to do with this poster." The map was designed by Art Director Mark Bruneman and published in Austin in 1995 by Civic Pride Inc. The firm was acquired by Silicon Maps which continues to create similar productions of tech-heavy areas today. Different versions of the present map were apparently issued in the late-1990s. OCLC reports just a single institutional copy of any version of the map issued in 1997 by Civic Pride and held in the Rumsey Collection at Stanford. Civic Pride, Inc. / Clarke Printing unknown books

1869Best.-Nr. 58233Fort Sedgwick Colorado Territory. January 6 1869. Army Frontier Outpost Trials the Mills Cartridge Belt A brief but enlightening manuscript military report from the short-lived Fort Sedgwick in Colorado recording the results of a series of tests undertaken to compare new designs for cartridge belts and boxes. Fort Sedgwick was built as a frontier outpost in 1864 in response to growing unrest and violent conflict with Native Americans during the Civil War and was known as a particularly challenging post due to the poor quality of its construction and its lack of access to water and wood. Parts of the 18th Infantry Regiment were stationed at Fort Sedgwick from 1866 but it became their headquarters at the beginning of 1869 making these tests some of their first actions at their new base. The report titled "Proceedings of a Board of Officers Convened at Fort Sedgwick C.T. per Special Orders No. 4" begins with a brief excerpt of those orders. They name the officers James Stewart R.P. Hughes and R.F. Bates and outline their duty "to make further trial of the relative merits of various patterns of Army Cartridge Box and Cartridge Belt." Comparing the Morris Pattern cartridge box Crispin Pattern cartridge box and a new cartridge belt through a variety of trials the board determined the following: "The Morris Pattern containing thirty six rounds 36 was emptied in thirty 30 seconds less time than Crispin's pattern Containing Thirty five 35 rounds and one minute and twenty seven 27 seconds less time than the Cartridge Belt containing forty 40 rounds. "The Boards then put all the Cartridge Boxes and the Belt in water and they remained in that way two days to test the swelling of the wood in the Morris Crispin and Hadley Cartridge Boxes and the tightening of the leather in the Cartridge Belt. When taken out it was found that the Boxes Belt work quite as well as when dry…. "The Board is of opinion that the weight is more equally divided in the Belt than in the Cartridge Box and easier on the men when marching in double time; they are further of the opinion that the Belt is in every way suitable for Campaigning purposes but for the soldier in garrison they are of opinion that the Cartridge Box Morris Pattern is more suitable the reasons are that the Belt as it is at the present time to look soldierly and neatly must contain the full number of rounds of Cartridges for which it is made while the Cartridge Box may only have a few rounds to make the weight lighter and still retain its neatness. "In the opinion of the Board the belt has many advantages one of them above named is that…it remains steadier in its place and the other is that the weight is more equally distributed; in the other hand the Cartridge Box Morris Pattern is more soldierly in appearance and the Cartridges can be handled more quickly and with less exertion than the Belt." Although his name is not mentioned in the report itself the document is docketed "Report of Officers on Belt Submitted by Lt. Anson Mills." The belt at hand then is in fact the famous Mills Cartridge Belt. While not immediately adopted following this report it became widespread throughout the United States Canada and England after Mills patented it in 1881 making Mills who remained in service until 1896 into a wealthy man. An interesting report from a frontier post following the Civil War recording the earliest tests of what would become a standard piece of military equipment for the next several decades. Slightly tanned scattered soiling very minor splitting at the edges of old folds. Very good. hardcover books

Best.-Nr. 12909San Jose CA: Gist & Erdmann Inc. / Panoramic Map Productions 1989. Color printed map on sturdy glossy paper 39 x 26.75 inches. Small piece of old cellophane tape in the upper margin tiny puncture in image area near top-middle portion of the map lightly wrinkled previously rolled. Overall in very good condition. A rare and charming 1989 pictorial cartoon map and calendar of Silicon Valley illustrated by Pham Bach Phi one of at least three such works produced by the artist during the tech boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Copyrighted and published as a joint venture between Gist & Erdmann Inc. and Panoramic Map Productions the view employs an inviting almost pastoral aesthetic that deliberately downplays the burgeoning urban sprawl brought on by the explosion of the computer industry. By depicting major freeways as rustic roads and rendering corporate headquarters in a modest commercial style the artist fosters a small-town atmosphere in a region that was at the time undergoing a radical industrial transformation. The poster is populated with company logos and vignettes that celebrate a local economy rapidly centralizing around the technology sector. Notable names include Oracle IBM Apple and Hewlett-Packard practically a "Who's Who" of the era's digital vanguard. The bottom portion of the work is printed with a calendar for the upcoming year of 1990 underscoring the item's original purpose as a functional office product in itself. The year 1990 like most years since the '70s marked the dawn of the digital era in Silicon Valley highlighted by Tim Berners-Lee installation of the first World Wide Web server on a NeXT computer -- Steve Jobs' post-Apple venture -- at CERN. The year also saw the launch of LambdaMOO at Xerox PARC the inaugural Photoshop Invitational in Mountain View and key early developments in 3D graphics and networking that set the stage for the dot-com boom and current computer technologies.
