In questo contesto nacque a Sutrio nel 1882 la Scuola di Disegno applicato alle arti ed alle industrie, che formò giovani artigiani specializzati fino alla fine degli anni '60. Il comune conserva ancora circa 3500 disegni tecnici realizzati dagli studenti. Tra i vari esercizi emergono centinaia di tavole per lo studio degli incastri del legno, intitolate unione dei legnami. Finemente disegnate durante le due ore di scuola serale, servivano come manuali di istruzione illustrati per lo svolgimento della parte pratica del corso. L'autrice raccoglie e rielabora una selezione di disegni di incastri, restituendo loro un valore di unicità, come testimonianza del periodo che ha trasformato la figura del falegname in artigiano specializzato. La crescita dell'ampio settore caratterizzato come design funzionale e anonimo, ha alimentato una delle attività economiche più rilevanti della Carnia friulana: la lavorazione del legno.
