From the Introduction: "The word 'butalastics' is adopted in this book to describe and discuss the elastic or plastic polymers of a butadiene compound with or without other compounds polymerizable with it. This volume deals with 17 listed categories of butalastics which may be called the true synthetic rubber-like products. The plan of the book is to give the history of the development of these products; the sources and production of the raw materials used for forming them; the mechanism of polymerization; the methods of polymerization and copolymerization or interpolymerization of the various compounds; the compounding practice industrial application and cure of the polymers; the properties and testing of the products; the reclaiming of butalastics waste; and derivatives of the butalastics.". Indeed on several pages throughout the book Kauzmann has made brief marginal corrections and/or clarifications to the text. Laid-in is a 5-page outline for Kauzmann's course at Princeton Univerity CHEMISTRY 305 PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY for which this book was required reading. This copy bears the signature stamp in 5 places of Professor Walter Kauzmann of Princeton University. Kauzmann's work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos in 1944-45 contributed to the successful development of the atomic bomb nicknamed "Fat Man" which incinerated Nagasaki and was soon followed by Japan's capitulation. It was in 1948 that Kauzmann's classic review of liquid supercooling and glass formation drew attention to temperatures at which entropies and enthalpies of liquid and crystal phases would appear to become equal. The collection of such "Kauzmann temperatures" produced characteristic curves in the temperature-pressure T p plane. Professor Kauzmann was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1966. Bound in the original green cloth. Complete with dust jacket. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. Certain phenomena occurring in ceramics lie at the frontier of science and stimulate scientific work of the highest sophistication and quality. These phenomena include the detailed behavior of superconducting polycrystalline oxides. The discovery of the widespread occurrence of phase separation in glass and the use of controlled nucleation and controlled crystallization in glass to produce crystalline ceramics has raised new stimulating scientific questions." .
