1973Best.-Nr. vas5284Gainesville FL: Ewing Printing INc. 1973. Octavo green textured wrappers softbound iv 225 pp. Fine. From Preface: Since no previous attempt has been made to narrate the story of the profession of Pharmacy in the State of Florida it was felt that there would be an interest in this by pharmacists and related personnel. An endeavor has been made in this book to give an accurate account and some of the activities which brought the profession to its present standing. In doing this each of the areas of pharmacy have been treated as a unit for ready reference. Florida with the oldest city in the United States St. Augustine remained a pioneer state until rather recent times when compared with some of its more northern neighbors. However pharmacists of Florida have contributed much to the profession as a whole. It is hoped that those who read the book will find the subject matter an interesting and beneficial background for their continued service to the public as members of the health care team. Many people have assisted in gathering information and deep appreciation is expressed to all of them. Contents: The Florida Pharmaceutical Association; The Ladies Auxiliary of the Florida Pharmaceutical Association; The Traveling Mens Auxiliary of the Florida Pharmaceutical Association; Some Early Pharmacy Laws in Florida; The Florida Board of Pharmacy; Pharmacy Education in Florida; Pharmacies and Pharmacists in Florida; Wholesale Drug Houses in Florida; Pharmaceutical Manufacturing in Florida; Hospital Pharmacy in Florida; References; Index. Best.-Nr. 150591985. Hauptman Herbert A. Autographed scientific manuscript on the probabilistic solution to the crystallographic phase problem twentieth century documenting the mathematical framework that transformed X ray crystallography and formed the basis for the 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Hauptman and Jerome Karle. The manuscript addresses the general formula for the compound probability distribution of the real and imaginary parts of the structure factor for both centrosymmetric and non centrosymmetric crystals as a function of the indices together with the probability distribution for the magnitude of the structure factor. These results established the theoretical foundation of direct methods in crystallography enabling determination of crystal structures without reliance on prior structural models and resolving the longstanding phase problem that had limited structural chemistry since the early development of diffraction techniques. Hauptman Herbert A. Autograph scientific manuscript. No place no date. Twenty three handwritten pages in pencil containing mathematical derivations and scientific exposition. The manuscript reflects Hauptman's pioneering probabilistic approach in which he derived probability distributions for phase invariants-most notably triplet phase relationships-and introduced a discriminant commonly denoted Δ capable of predicting whether a triplet phase is near 0 or π. Extreme values of this discriminant correlate with extreme values of the invariant providing a practical figure of merit for structure solution. These concepts allowed experimentally observed diffraction intensities to be mathematically linked to otherwise inaccessible phase information yielding a unified treatment applicable across the full range of crystal symmetries encountered in real materials. From this framework flowed the systematic and routine solution of increasingly complex molecular structures including biologically and chemically significant compounds fundamentally reshaping research in inorganic chemistry organic chemistry and the chemistry of natural products. His Nobel Prize recognized a methodological breakthrough rather than a single compound or reaction underscoring the structural and conceptual transformation his work produced across inorganic organic and biological chemistry. Light handling wear consistent with working scientific notes; pages intact clean and fully legible in pencil. Overall condition: very good. As an autograph working manuscript this document constitutes rare primary evidence of the mathematical reasoning that solved the crystallographic phase problem and laid the groundwork for modern structural determination across science chemistry and medicine. Condition: The manuscript is in very good condition with all 23 pages intact clean and clearly legible in pencil showing only light handling wear consistent with working scientific notes. Overall condition: Very Good. unknown books

I have nothing to say about heparin whatsoever but for the sake of filling up a little space will quote Wikipedia's description of it as a "medication which is used as a blood thinner that is specifically used to treat and prevent deep vein thrombosis pulmonary embolism and arterial thromboembolism and also used in the treatment of heart attacks and unstable angina." Was this particular tome a significant contribution to the literature of heparin I've got no idea but never mind all of that anyway: as far as I'm concerned the interest in this volume lies in the fact that it was authored and autographed! by the doctor who will go down in history as Marilyn Monroe's personal physician. Not only was he the guy who prescribed some of the medications that likely contributed to her death but who also was the one who actually discovered her body and first notified the police. It's also been claimed that he lied about various matters connected with the situation both at the time and in later testimony and interviews but let's not debate that here. You gotta give the doc this much credit though: if a similar situation happened today someone in his position probably would have scored a pretty sweet book deal -- and not for some dry text issued by a medical-book publisher in Springfield Illinois either. The volume bearing the autograph presentation of Lennard-Jones on the front endpaper: "With compliments & kind regards / J E Lennard-Jones / April 1953". The presentation beneath the ownership signature of Robert S Mulliken - Nobel laureate in Chemistry in 1966 for work similar to that of Lennard-Jones. Molecular orbitals and chemical bonding are the primary topics of these Jones papers co-authored with his graduate assistants. There are 11 sequential papers entitled: Molecular Orbital Theory and Valency issued between 1949-1952 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society. Added to these the remaining papers - from varied journals - are all related to chemical bonding electronic structure and spatial relations of electrons in atoms and molecules. A superb association of some of the most original work - apart from Pauling - of these two Nobel laureates. It would be difficult to find a more apposite group of research papers for Mulliken and Lennard-Jones. Several papers in the volume are co-authored with John Pople a student of Lennard-Jones in this period and future Nobel laureate in Chemistry in 1998 A C Hurley who studied under Dirac at Cambridge and then with Lennard-Jones and G G Hall the latter were mathematicians - there is no Nobel Prize offered in the field of mathematics. Each had a profound impact on the field of "quantum chemistry" in its nascent days. A unique volume - there is no copy at Cambridge or in the Lennard-Jones papers and nothing recorded in OCLC; DSB VIII 185-187 for Lennard-Jones. Various journals hardcover books
