Andrade In Nature 1944 "Emil Hatschek Who Died In London On June 4 At The Age Of Seventy-Five Carried Out Pioneer Work In Many Branches Of Colloid Science And Did Much To Direct Attention In England To This Subject. In Spite Of The Stimulus Supplied By The Classical Researches Of Thomas Graham Little Was Being Done In This Country On Colloids When In 1911 Hatschek Started A Systematic Course Of Lectures On Colloidal Chemistry At The Sir John Cass Institute. This Was I Believe The First Regular Course On The Subject To Be Given In England And It Continued Until 1935 When Hatschek Reached The Age Limit For Retirement. From About 1910 Until 1932 Hatschek Was Producing Original Papers All Marked By Elegance And Strong Individuality Which Appeared In Various Periodicals Including The Proceedings Of The Royal Society The Transactions Of The Faraday Society Chemistry And Industry The Biochemical Journal And The Transactions Of The Institute Of Mining And Metallurgy Apart From The Twenty-Six Or So That Appeared In The Kolloid-Zeitschrift. These Names Do Something To Indicate The Width Of Interest Of His Work. His Services To Colloid Science Were Acknowledged When He Was Made The Guest Of Honour At The Colloid Symposium At Ottawa In 1932 A Distinction Much Appreciated By Him. P. Per An Article In "Chemical Engineer" By Adrian Finn His Father Was An Assistant To James Dewar At The University Of Cambridge And Supported Dewar In Being The First Person To Liquify Hydrogen In 1898. The Family Left The Uk For Germany With The Advent Of World War One. Martin Studied And Gained A Phd At The University Of Berlin With The Leading Physicists Of The Time And Knew Einstein Heisenberg And Schrödinger. Increasing Fascism And Antisemitism Caused Martin To Leave Germany To Go To What Appeared A Dream Job In Kharkiv Ukraine Then In The Ussr Joining A Group Of Leading Low-Temperature Physicists. He Developed Into A Chemical Engineer Employing Thermodynamic Principles To The Design Of Cryogenic Plants. However Within A Few Years It Became Clear That Work Colleagues Were "Disappearing" In Soviet "Purges" So He Left For England. His Work In Kharkiv Led To His Seminal Work The Separation Of Gases In 1940. Per Wikipedia His Wife Barbara Ruhemann 1905 - April 1976 Was A German And British Physical Chemist Anthropologist And Translator. Dj With Almost No Wear A Few Small Losses At Corners A Very Few Short Edge Tears. Ownership Signature Of Pioneering Computer Engineer Willis H. Ware. Maria Goeppert Mayer June 28 1906 - February 20 1972 Was A German-Born American Theoretical Physicist And Nobel Laureate In Physics For Proposing The Nuclear Shell Model Of The Atomic Nucleus. She Was The Second Female Nobel Laureate In Physics After Marie Curie. A Graduate Of The University Of Göttingen Goeppert Mayer Wrote Her Doctorate On The Theory Of Possible Two-Photon Absorption By Atoms. At The Time The Chances Of Experimentally Verifying Her Thesis Seemed Remote But The Development Of The Laser Permitted This. Today The Unit For The Two-Photon Absorption Cross Section Is Named The Goeppert Mayer Gm Unit. Goeppert Mayer Married Joseph Edward Mayer And Moved To The United States Where He Was An Associate Professor At Johns Hopkins University. Strict Rules Against Nepotism Prevented Johns Hopkins University From Taking Her On As A Faculty Member But She Was Given A Job As An Assistant And Published A Landmark Paper On Double Beta Decay In 1935. In 1937 She Moved To Columbia University Where She Took An Unpaid Position. During World War Ii She Worked For The Manhattan Project At Columbia On Isotope Separation And With Edward Teller At The Los Alamos Laboratory On The Development Of The Teller's "Super" Bomb. After The War Goeppert Mayer Became A Voluntary Associate Professor Of Physics At The University Of Chicago Where Teller And Her Husband Worked And A Senior Physicist At The Nearby Argonne National Laboratory. She Developed A Mathematical Model For The Structure Of Nuclear Shells For Which She Was Awarded The Nobel Prize In Physics In 1963 Which She Shared With J. Hans D. Jensen And Eugene Wigner. In 1960 She Was Appointed Full Professor Of Physics At The University Of California At San Diego. Ware'S Participation In A Classified World War Ii Project To Identify Friendly Aircraft Led The Mathematician John Von Neumann To Recruit Him To Help Develop A Computer At The Institute For Advanced Study In Princeton N.J. In 1946. That Machine Was Not The First Digital Computer But It Was Based On A Set Of Design Ideas Described By Dr. Von Neumann That Were Broadly Influential - First On The Design Of Computers Built By Scientists Around The World And Then On An Early Ibm Computer Known As The 701. Many Of These Concepts Are Still Visible In The Structure Of Modern Computers And Smartphones. Mr. Ware Part Of A Small Group Of Engineers Working On That Machine Was The First To Try To Engineer Many Of The Components That Would Become Vital To Modern Computers. His Experience In Designing High-Speed Electronic Circuits During The War Was Essential To His Work On The Computer At The Institute For Advanced Study Said George Dyson A Historian Of The Project.
