He Was A Department Head At The Kaiser Wilhelm Institute For Physical Chemistry And Electrochemistry Now The Fritz Haber Institute From 1919 Until 1933 When The Racial Policies Of The Nazi Party Demanded The Dismissal Of Non-Aryans From Senior Posts. In 1934 He Became A Foreign Member Of The Royal Netherlands Academy Of Arts And Sciences. Emigrating To England Freundlich Accepted A Guest Professorship At University College London. Five Years Later He Accepted A Professorship At The University Of Minnesota. Irving Langmuir 1881 - 1957 Was An American Chemist And Physicist. His Most Famous Publication Is The 1919 Article "The Arrangement Of Electrons In Atoms And Molecules" In Which Building On Gilbert N. Lewis's Cubical Atom Theory And Walther Kossel's Chemical Bonding Theory He Outlined His "Concentric Theory Of Atomic Structure". While At General Electric From 1909 To 1950 Langmuir Advanced Several Fields Of Physics And Chemistry Invented The Gas-Filled Incandescent Lamp And The Hydrogen Welding Technique. Langmuir And Tonks Discovered Electron Density Waves In Plasmas That Are Now Known As Langmuir Waves. He Introduced The Concept Of Electron Temperature And In 1924 Invented The Diagnostic Method For Measuring Both Temperature And Density With An Electrostatic Probe Now Called A Langmuir Probe And Commonly Used In Plasma Physics. Following World War I Langmuir Contributed To Atomic Theory And The Understanding Of Atomic Structure By Defining The Modern Concept Of Valence Shells And Isotopes. Langmuir Was Awarded The 1932 Nobel Prize In Chemistry For His Work In Surface Chemistry. The Langmuir Laboratory For Atmospheric Research Near Socorro New Mexico Was Named In His Honor As Was The American Chemical Society Journal For Surface Science Called Langmuir. The Langmuir Adsorption Model Explains Adsorption By Assuming An Adsorbate Behaves As An Ideal Gas At Isothermal Conditions. The Freundlich Isotherm Has Two Parameters While Langmuir's Equations Has Only One: As A Result It Often Fits The Data On Rough Surfaces Better Than The Langmuir's Equations. Per Wikjipedia Sir William Ramsay Kcb Frs Frse 1852 - 1916 Was A Scottish Chemist Who Discovered The Noble Gases And Received The Nobel Prize In Chemistry In 1904 "In Recognition Of His Services In The Discovery Of The Inert Gaseous Elements In Air" Along With His Collaborator John William Strutt 3Rd Baron Rayleigh Who Received The Nobel Prize In Physics That Same Year For Their Discovery Of Argon. After The Two Men Identified Argon Ramsay Investigated Other Atmospheric Gases. His Work In Isolating Argon Helium Neon Krypton And Xenon Led To The Development Of A New Section Of The Periodic Table. William Ramsay Formed Pyridine In 1876 From Acetylene And Hydrogen Cyanide In An Iron-Tube Furnace In What Was The First Synthesis Of A Heteroaromatic Compound. In 1887 He Succeeded Alexander Williamson As The Chair Of Chemistry At University College London Ucl. It Was Here At Ucl That His Most Celebrated Discoveries Were Made. As Early As 1885-1890 He Published Several Notable Papers On The Oxides Of Nitrogen Developing The Skills That He Needed For His Subsequent Work. On The Evening Of 19 April 1894 Ramsay Attended A Lecture Given By Lord Rayleigh. Rayleigh Had Noticed A Discrepancy Between The Density Of Nitrogen Made By Chemical Synthesis And Nitrogen Isolated From The Air By Removal Of The Other Known Components. After A Short Conversation He And Ramsay Decided To Investigate This. In August Ramsay Told Rayleigh He Had Isolated A New Heavy Component Of Air Which Did Not Appear To Have Any Chemical Reactivity. He Named This Inert Gas "Argon" From The Greek Word Meaning "Lazy".2 In The Following Years Working With Morris Travers He Discovered Neon Krypton And Xenon. He Also Isolated Helium Which Had Only Been Observed In The Spectrum Of The Sun And Had Not Previously Been Found On Earth. In 1910 He Isolated And Characterized Radon. In 1904 Ramsay Received The Nobel Prize In Chemistry. Ramsay's Standing Among Scientists Led Him To Become An Adviser To The Indian Institute Of Science. He Suggested Bangalore As The Location For The Institute. Macmillan and Co hardcover

Dj With Almost No Wear A Few Small Losses At Corners A Very Few Short Edge Tears. Ownership Signature Of Pioneering Computer Engineer Willis H. Ware. Maria Goeppert Mayer June 28 1906 - February 20 1972 Was A German-Born American Theoretical Physicist And Nobel Laureate In Physics For Proposing The Nuclear Shell Model Of The Atomic Nucleus. She Was The Second Female Nobel Laureate In Physics After Marie Curie. A Graduate Of The University Of Göttingen Goeppert Mayer Wrote Her Doctorate On The Theory Of Possible Two-Photon Absorption By Atoms. At The Time The Chances Of Experimentally Verifying Her Thesis Seemed Remote But The Development Of The Laser Permitted This. Today The Unit For The Two-Photon Absorption Cross Section Is Named The Goeppert Mayer Gm Unit. Goeppert Mayer Married Joseph Edward Mayer And Moved To The United States Where He Was An Associate Professor At Johns Hopkins University. Strict Rules Against Nepotism Prevented Johns Hopkins University From Taking Her On As A Faculty Member But She Was Given A Job As An Assistant And Published A Landmark Paper On Double Beta Decay In 1935. In 1937 She Moved To Columbia University Where She Took An Unpaid Position. During World War Ii She Worked For The Manhattan Project At Columbia On Isotope Separation And With Edward Teller At The Los Alamos Laboratory On The Development Of The Teller's "Super" Bomb. After The War Goeppert Mayer Became A Voluntary Associate Professor Of Physics At The University Of Chicago Where Teller And Her Husband Worked And A Senior Physicist At The Nearby Argonne National Laboratory. She Developed A Mathematical Model For The Structure Of Nuclear Shells For Which She Was Awarded The Nobel Prize In Physics In 1963 Which She Shared With J. Hans D. Jensen And Eugene Wigner. In 1960 She Was Appointed Full Professor Of Physics At The University Of California At San Diego. Ware'S Participation In A Classified World War Ii Project To Identify Friendly Aircraft Led The Mathematician John Von Neumann To Recruit Him To Help Develop A Computer At The Institute For Advanced Study In Princeton N.J. In 1946. That Machine Was Not The First Digital Computer But It Was Based On A Set Of Design Ideas Described By Dr. Von Neumann That Were Broadly Influential - First On The Design Of Computers Built By Scientists Around The World And Then On An Early Ibm Computer Known As The 701. Many Of These Concepts Are Still Visible In The Structure Of Modern Computers And Smartphones. Mr. Ware Part Of A Small Group Of Engineers Working On That Machine Was The First To Try To Engineer Many Of The Components That Would Become Vital To Modern Computers. His Experience In Designing High-Speed Electronic Circuits During The War Was Essential To His Work On The Computer At The Institute For Advanced Study Said George Dyson A Historian Of The Project.
