1914ref. 76234San Francisco: Pacific Gas and Electric Co. 1914. First and only edition. Quarto 9 x 11 1/2 inches. 4 double leaves 12 double leaves of colorized photographic illustrations. Publisher's quarter brown boars over green boards green endpaper to match. Head of spine a but bumped else a bright and fresh copy. The color illustrations are all of P.G. & E works and include; Electra Power House; Cordelia Substation;De-Sabla Power House; Paterson Ranch Pumping Plant; Centerville Power House; Carquinez Straits Crossing; Spillway-Spaulding Damn; Potrero Gas Works; San Rafael Substation; Colgate Power-House; Brown's Valley Ditch; Champion Mine-Nevada County.Ostensibly issued as a keepsake for Christmas of 1914 the real reason was likely to brag about the completion in 1913 of the huge Big Creek plant the gem of the P.G & E system. It is estimated that there were over 100 hydroelectric plants operational in California by 1914. These ranged from small local plants to large-scale projects supplying power to major cities. This was a very deluxe item so it is probable that PGE presented it only major stockholders This is borne out by the fact that OCLC only records 9 copies Printing colorized photographs in books in 1914 was a very complex and costly process. Special paper had to be used thus the french-fold binding here and the technology was still in its nascent form. But the illustrations fairly burst with color. This was at P.G. & E.'s most muscular; in the 21st century the company filed twice for bankruptcy. (Pacific Gas and Electric Co.) hardcover

1799ref. 44095Halle Rengerschen Buchhandlung 1799 1800. Without wrappers extracted from "Annalen der Physik. Herausgegeben von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert" Bd. 2. p. 483 one page. and Bd. 6 pp. 105-115. Some scattered brownspots. First German translation of Davy's announcement the announcement on 1 page of his discovery of the unusual anaesthetic effects of nitrous oxide which on being inhaled gave rise to a giddy intoxicated feeling. On announcing his discovery he says that he will publish a paper discribing the experiments with the gas later. This is the paper offered here also in the first German version. Both the announcement and the paper were issued in the "Annalen" the same year as they appeared in Nicholson's Journal. The gas was first synthesized by English natural philosopher and chemist Joseph Priestley in 1772 who called it phlogisticated nitrous air."Following Priestley's discovery Humphry Davy of the Pneumatic Institute in Bristol England experimented with the physiological properties of the gas such as its effects upon respiration. He even administered the gas to visitors to the institute and after watching the amusing effects on people who inhaled it coined the term 'laughing gas'! Davy even noted the anaesthetic effects of the gas: "As nitrous oxide in its extensive operation appears capable of destroying physical pain it may probably be used with advantage during surgical operations in which no great effusion of blood takes place".Wikipedia."Davy discovered the anaesthetic properties of nitrous oxide and suggested its use during surgiical operations a suggestion which was not turned to useful account until 1844."Garrison & Morton 5646 not mentioning the announcing of its discovery in 1799. unknown
1880ref. 42765London Harrison and Sons 1880. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" Year 1879 Vol. 171 - Part II. Pp. 231-256. Clean and fine. First appearance of a major paper on Gas Dynamics creating a whole new science. One of Maxwell's major investigations was on the kinetic theory of gases. Originating with Daniel Bernoulli this theory was advanced by the successive labours of John Herapath John James Waterston James Joule and particularly Rudolf Clausius to such an extent as to put its general accuracy beyond a doubt; but it received enormous development from Maxwell who in this field appeared as an experimenter on the laws of gaseous friction as well as a mathematician."Maxwell's last major paper on any subject was "On Stresses in Rarified Gases arising from Inequalities of Temperature." Between 1873 and 1876 the scientific world had been stirred by William Crooke's experiments with the radiometer the well-known device composed of a partuially evacuated chamber containing a paddle wheel with vanes blackened on one side and silvered on the other which spins rapidly when radiant heat impinges on it.Reynolds called this new effect "thermal transpiration". Maxwell gave a simple qualitative explanation in his report and in an appendix added to his own paper in May 1879 he developed a semiempirical theory accounting for it and for the radiometer effect.Maxwell's paper created the science of rarified gas dynamics. His formulas for stress and heat flux in the body of the gas were contributions of permanent value while his investigations of surface effects started a vast body of research extending to the present day.One other contribution of great beauty contained in notes added to the papwer in May and June 1879 was an application of the methods of spherical harmonic analysis to gas theory."DSB IX p. 224-25. unknown

Ampere's paper: pp. Some scattered brownspots. First appearance of Amperes second paper on molecular physics."The noumenal aspect of chemistry fascinated Ampère. Although his derivation of Avogadro’s law came three years after Avogadro had enunciated it the law is known today in France as the Avogadro-Ampère law. This was Ampère’s first excursion into molecular physics and was followed almost immediately by a second. In 1815 he published a paper demonstrating the relation between Mariotte’s Boyle’s law and volumes and pressures of gases at the same temperature. The paper is of some interest as a pioneer effort along with Laplac’s great papers on capillarity in the application of Mathematical analysis to the molecular realm."DSB.The volume contains 3 importent papers by Jean-Baptiste Biot on polarisation of light and Berzelius "Experiences pour déterminer les proportions définies dans lequelles les élémens de la nature organique sont combinés" "Suite." 1-2 pp. 5-33 pp. 170-190 a. pp. 296-232 unknown
