The American newspaper editor and magazine writer Murat Halstead 1829-1908 was a war correspondent during 3 wars. He bought interest in the paper while working as a local reporter for Cincinnati's "Commercial". Halstead reported on several battles during the Civil War and was a war correspondent during the Franco-Prussian War. He took over controlling interest in the "Commercial" and became president of the company when the "Cincinnati Gazette" merged with his paper. Moving to Brooklyn in 1890 he edited the "Standard Union". He went to the Philippines as a war correspondent at the start of the Spanish-American War. The article which Halstead mentions in his letter is about St. Clair McKelway the editor of "The Brooklyn Daily Eagle". Halstead's own paper the "Standard Union" was also in Brooklyn. An advocacy journalist in the tradition of New England liberalism Quincy Howe 1900-1977 helped bring food to striking miners in Harlan County Ky in 1932; opposed restriction of immigration; and was active in prison reform. As a director of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1932 to 1940 he fought against censorship. But it was in foreign policy matters that Howe drew the most attention in the thirties. A critic of dictatorships of the left and the right he was sympathetic to the rising nationalist movements in the colonial empires of the Old World. He was a member of the left-wing American League against War and Fascism. In his writings of that time he stressed the dangers of American intervention in another world war. Max Lerner 1902-1992 was an American journalist and educator known for his controversial syndicated column in the New York Post. The column which debuted in 1949 earned him a place on Nixon's enemies list. His most influential book was "America as a Civilization: Life and Thought in the United States Today" 1957. One of the most significant educators during the Progressive era of education Harold Rugg 1886-1960 was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. 1930réf. 101415circ 1930's. 1930's. Very good. - An 3-3/8 inch high by 2-1/4 inch wide photograph possibly from a magazine mounted on white paper stock with an ink ruled frame itself mounted on a 5-7/8 inch high by 3-3/8 inch brown card stock with an Art Nouveau illustration on the verso. The corners of the portrait and mounts are attractively cropped. The photo depicts the American journalist Walter Lippmann from the shoulders up and is inscribed & signed to the future U.S. Congressman Seymour Halpern along the bottom border of the mount "To Seymour Halpern with all good wishes / Walt Lippmann". The photograph is lightly rubbed with some light soiling to the mount. Very good. The American journalist Walter Lippmann 1889-1974 is famous for being among one of the first to introduce the concept of the Cold War. He also coined the term "stereotype" in its psychological meaning. Throughout his 60 year career Lippmann critiqued media and democracy through his Public Opinion column and in several books which he authored. Lippmann served as director of Woodrow Wilson's post World War I board of inquiry. His views of the role of journalism were in contrast with those of John Dewey and their exchange of opinions came to be known as the Lippmann-Dewey Debate. Lippmann was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his column "Today and Tomorrow" and another for his interview with Nikita Krushchev. The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. circ [1930's].
