2013br.

1978réf. 101321New York: December 1 1978. 1978. Very good. - Over 80 words typed on his 11 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide "New York Post / Office of the Publisher" stationery. Replying to U.S. Congressman's note media mogul Rupert Murdoch writes "I was probably being a little over-sensitive when I wrote to you but I had just read the allegations that were being made in South Africa about John McGoff." He concludes by suggesting they make a "lunch date sometime in early January if that suits you." Signed "Rupert Murdoch". Folded twice for mailing with light diagonal creases and a paperclip stain at top left and a couple of ink lines at the bottom. Very good. John McGoff who owned seventy newspapers was a competitor of Murdoch's. He was accused of using South African government money to try and buy the Washington Star - which Murdoch also tried to buy. The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. New York: December 1, 1978.
1948réf. 101471New York January 14 1948. 1948. Very good. - Over 60 words typed on 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide "PM Daily" stationery. The award-winning American journalist & social historian Albert Deutsch accepts an invitation from Dr. Harold Rugg of Columbia University's Teachers College "I would be delighted to take the February 25th date and talk on 'The Role of the Press in Social Reform.'." he goes on to praise Dr. Rugg "Needless to say I have always admired you progressive work in the educational field and have long awaited an opportunity for a get-together." Signed in full "Albert Deutsch". Folded for mailing with a minor stain and indentation from a paper clip at the top. Very good. Together with a retained copy of Harold Rugg's reply asking if he could choose another date as many of his group will be attending the "annual mid-Winter meeting in Atlantic City" on that date. The American journalist and social historian Albert Deutsch 1905-1961 received the 1948 George Polk Award for "Science Reporting". After dropping out of high school Deutsch supported himself as a longshoreman farm worker and shipyard worker while continuing to educate himself. Landing a position as an archivist-researcher with the New York State Department of Public Welfare in 1934 he contributed by writing a history of the welfare period between 1867 to 1940. He became involved with the National Foundation for Mental Health proposing to co-author a history of psychiatry in the United States with Clifford Beers. He was a columnist for PM writing on the social aspects of health care and contributed to its successor the New York Star. Deutsch later published several books on social subjects. One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education the recipient Harold Rugg 1886-1960 was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A Civil Engineer he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education. He was responsible for producing the very first series of school textbooks from 1929 until the 1940's. New York, January 14, 1948.

Morgan's Wall Street address printed at top left. Signed "Martin Egan". There is a small very light stain at top right. Folded 3 times for mailing. Near fine. Egan writes to James B. Pond of the Pond Lecture Bureau regretting that he and his wife are unable to accept Pond's invitation to attend actress Dorothy Sands' show. Martin Egan 1872-1938 was an American journalist who wrote for newspapers and magazines in America and Canada and for the Associated Press in New York London Tokyo Peking and Manila. 1947réf. 96266New York: October 1 1947. 1947. Very good. - Letter typed on one side of a 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/2 inch wide sheet of PM Daily letterhead. Signed "Max". The top edge is slightly darkened & the top right corner is lightly creased. Folded twice for mailing. Very good. Max Lerner regrets that he is unable to accept an invitation to speak in Harold Rugg's lecture series: "I got myself tied to a series of radio and lecture commitments in addition to my PM work and on top of it all I am trying to finish up my book on American civilization" "America as a Civilization: Life and Thought in the United States Today". After congratulating Rugg on his recent marriage he writes that he hadn't known about Rugg's new book. "PM" only publishes two book reviews a week but he will ask them to look into it with special care. Max Lerner 1902-1992 was an American journalist and educator known for his controversial syndicated column in the New York Post. The column which debuted in 1949 earned him a place on Nixon's enemies list. "America as a Civilization" which doesn't get published until 1957 was his most influential book. One of the most significant educators during the Progressive era of education Harold Rugg 1886-1960 was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A Civil Engineer he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education.
