1762(2), 183, (1) SS. "In 1762 the elector palatine, Karl Theodor, who was very interested in the arts and sciences, constructed an astronomical observatory for Mayer at Schwetzingen, his summer residence. In 1772-1774 a second and larger observatory was erected at Mannheim, then the capital of the electoral Palatinate. This observatory was well equipped for the time, with instruments from the best British workshops [...] Appointed court astronomer, Mayer was relieved of his duties as a theologian (the Jesuit order was dissolved by Pope Clement XIV in 1773, which made such a step easier)" (DSB IX, 231). 8vo. 16 pp. Original printed wrappers, bound within modern boards. With the author's three-line-autograph inscription to his friend Friedrich Schwandner, with whom he had studied at Tübingen and formed an illicit students' union, the "Corps Guestphalia", for which reason the two had been arrested in 1837. Both works, "Über die Torricellische Leere" and "Über Auslösung", were separately published in 1875 and 1876 within the "Beilage des Staatsanzeigers für Württemberg". Eisert 29.
