2022About The Book : The Kath?sarits?gara is a large work. Each book comprises a number of stories loosely strung together, by being narrated for the recreation or information of the same individuals, or arising out of their adventures. These are Udayana, king of Kosambi, and his son Naravahanadatta. The marriage of the latter with various damsels of terrestrial or celestial origin, and his elevation to the rank of king of the Vidyadharas, a class of heavenly spirits, are the leading topics of most of the books; but they merely constitute the skeleton of the composition, the substance being made up of stories growing out of these circumstances, or springing from one another with an ingenuity of intricacy which is one of the great charms of all such collections. About The Author : Somadeva Bhatta was an eleventh century writer from Kashmir. Not much is known about him except that his father's name was Rama and he composed his work (probably during the years 1063-81 CE) for the entertainment of the queen Suryamati, a princess of Jalandhara and wife of King Ananta of Kashmir. The queen was quite distraught as it was a time when the political situation in Kashmir was 'one of discontent, intrigue, bloodshed and despair'.Though he was a Shaiva Brahmin, he was respectful of Buddhism and some of the tales in the Kathasaritsagara show Buddhist influences.Revised by Pansikar Wasudev Laxman Sastri has written famous books, like, Panchdashi with commentary; Yajnavalkya with the commentary, Kavyapradipa (An old and rare book); and many more, the master piece of all is The Ramayana of Valmeki a curious amalgamation of the aforementioned three mediums of teaching. 1987Very Good Very Good English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. [Lvii], 236 p. Two Tamil folktales: The story of King Matanakâma - The story of peacock Râvana. Translated from the Tamil by Kamil V. Zvelebil. "Taamil literary folklore has so far received little attention, in spite of a few early publications which appeared mostly in the 19th century. Mosst of Tamil literary texts translated into Western languages, or analyzed in Indological literature, belonged too the Tamil 'Great Tradition' of high literary culture. And yet, there exists an enormous wealth of oral and semi-oral traditions of verbal art in Tamil, as in any other Indian language; some of these pieces of literary folklore have appeared in print as chapbooks and are very popular with Tamil readers, but ignored by 'respactable' literary scholarship. The two folk-narratives translated in this book belong to the favourite pieces of Tamil folklore. Apart from being expressions of sheer narrative joy and creative fantasy of the Tamil people, they are a rich source of comparative data on various motifs, customs, stylistic devices etc., and therefore they will not only amuse and delight the general reader, but be of great use to all students of Indian literatures, and of comparative folklore.".
