FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 212 pp. ; 169 illus. 77 in color. -- with a bonus offer--; Much recent scholarship in American art history and cultural studies examines cross-cultural exchanges in the shaping of American art and culture. This lavishly illustrated volume contributes to this endeavor by exploring through seven scholarly essays and more than 150 color and back-and-white images how the transatlantic encounters of three of America's most notable nineteenth- and early twentieth-century artists helped mold American art. Robert Walter Weir 1803-1889 and his sons John Ferguson Weir 1841-1926 and Julian Alden Weir 1852-1919 saw themselves as heirs to European art traditions and repeatedly crossed the Atlantic to connect with their artistic heritage. Yet they lived painted and taught in New York and New England where they were leaders in American art. Robert taught art at West Point John founded the first academic art program on a U.S. college campus at Yale and Julian was a major American impressionist. Their combined works provide a compendium of the painting genres produced in Europe and America across an entire century. Through letters diaries histories and paintings this book examines the lives of the American men and women of the Weir art dynasty and their explorations of the wider world--from the Hudson River Valley to London Paris and Rome. . 2011. 1611680212 . 1917ref. 444421Detroit Michigan 1917. Softcover. Good/Near Fine. Oblong octavo measuring 10.5" x 7". Lacking the boards but glued spine still present. Contains 351 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 3.25" x 2.25" and 4" x 3.25" with some captions. Some pages detached from the spine but present good with near fine photographs with tidemarks. A family photo album from 1905 through to 1917 living in Detroit Michigan on Iroquois Avenue. The album shows the family and their two children growing up and traveling around to various places although very little is captioned in the album aside from a few names and locations. Various pictures of the family with their children Cherc and Carl Weir in and around their small but quaint home. The wife is wearing highly decorative hats with feathers flowers and ribbons which is a stark contrast to her white button downs and rather plain skirts seen in the album while at home. However her traveling outfits are much more lavish with large fur coats and stylish dresses as the years progress in the album. Her husband was a coal miner and can be seen in his mining gear with all his coworkers. The family is seen setting up tents for a camping trip and enjoying their time canoeing on a lake while camping and visiting waterfalls. The family traveled in their personal automobile pictured throughout the album to different places around Michigan including the Colonial Oliver Hazard Perry monument. A brief but charming family album from the mid-1900s to the mid-1910s in Detroit Michigan. unknown
