Per Wikipedia Sir James Hopwood Jeans Om Frs 1877 - 1946 Was An English Physicist Mathematician And An Astronomer. He Served As A Secretary Of The Royal Society From 1919 To 1929 And Was The President Of The Royal Astronomical Society From 1925 To 1927 And Won Its Gold Medal.Jeans Was Elected Fellow Of Trinity College In October 1901 And Taught At Cambridge But Went To Princeton University In 1904 As A Professor Of Applied Mathematics. He Returned To Cambridge In 1910. From 1923 To 1944 He Was Associated With Caltech's Mount Wilson Observatory. He Made Important Contributions In Many Areas Of Physics Including Quantum Theory The Theory Of Radiation And Stellar Evolution. Jeans Along With Arthur Eddington Is A Founder Of British Cosmology. His Scientific Reputation Is Grounded In The Monographs The Dynamical Theory Of Gases 1904 Theoretical Mechanics 1906 And Mathematical Theory Of Electricity And Magnetism 1908. After Retiring In 1929 He Wrote A Number Of Books For The Lay Public. One Of Jeans's Major Discoveries Named The Jeans Length Is A Critical Radius Of An Interstellar Cloud In Space. It Depends On The Temperature And Density Of The Cloud And The Mass Of The Particles Composing The Cloud. A Cloud That Is Smaller Than Its Jeans Length Will Not Have Sufficient Gravity To Overcome The Repulsive Gas Pressure Forces And Condense To Form A Star Whereas A Cloud That Is Larger Than Its Jeans Length Will Collapse. Jeans Came Up With Another Version Of This Equation Called The Jeans Mass Or The Jeans Instability That Solves For The Critical Mass A Cloud Must Attain Before Being Able To Collapse. Jeans Also Helped To Discover The Rayleigh-Jeans Law Which Relates The Energy Density Of Black-Body Radiation To The Temperature Of The Emission Source. Jeans Is Also Credited With Calculating The Rate Of Atmospheric Escape From A Planet Due To Kinetic Energy Of The Gas Molecules A Process Known As Jeans Escape. The Macmillan Company hardcover

Webster Had Graduated From Harvard College In 1885 At The Top Of His Class And Had Stayed For A Year As Instructor In Mathematics And Physics. At The End Of That Year He Went To The University Of Berlin Where He Studied For Four Years With Hermann Von Helmholtz Receiving His Phd In 1890. Helmholtz Is Said To Have Considered Webster His Favorite American Student. During This Period Webster Also Studied In Paris And Stockholm. He Was Unusually Proficient In Literature And Was Fluent In Latin Greek German French And Swedish With A Good Knowledge Of Italian And Spanish And Competency In Russian And Modern Greek. Clark University President G. Stanley Hall Appointed Webster Assistant Professor And Head Of The Physical Laboratories In 1892 When Physicist Albert A. Michelson Left For The Newly Organized University Of Chicago. At That Time Only Johns Hopkins University And Clark University Had Doctoral Programs In Physics. Webster Was Promoted To Full Professor In 1900. Webster Was Unusual For His Time In That He Was Both A Proficient Mathematician As Well As A Competent Experimentalist. Webster's Research Was In The Field Of Acoustics And Mechanics. He Is Credited With Developing An Instrument To Measure The Absolute Intensity Of Sound The Phonometer And For Research On The Gyroscope. He Also Gave Graduate Lectures In Theoretical Physics At Clark University Which Have Been Published As Three Textbooks. A Group Of 20 Physicists Invited By Webster Founded The American Physical Society At A Meeting At Fayerweather Hall In Columbia University On May 20 1899. In 1903 Webster Became President Of The American Physical Society And Was Elected To The National Academy Of Sciences. Webster Committed Suicide In 1923 Leaving A Note To Huis Son How He Felt That Every Aspect Of His Life Was A Failure Including The Impending Closure Pf Clark'S Physical Sciences Department. Nicolaas 'Nico' Godfried Van Kampen 1921 -2013 Was A Dutch Theoretical Physicist Who Worked Mainly On Statistical Mechanics And Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics. Van Kampen Was Born In Leiden And Was A Nephew Of Frits Zernike. He Studied Physics At Leiden University Where In 1952 Under The Direction Of Hendrik Anthony Kramers He Earned His Phd With Thesis Contributions To The Quantum Theory Of Light Scattering. He Showed In His Thesis How To Deal With Singularities In Quantum Mechanical Scattering Processes Which Was An Important Step In The Development Of Renormalization According To Kramers. Van Kampen Made Fundamental Contributions To Non-Equilibrium Processes In Particular On The Master Equation And In Many-Body Theory Especially In Plasma Physics. His Work On Non-Equilibrium Processes Began In 1953 In The Research Group Of Sybren Ruurds De Groot The Successor To Kramers In Leiden. In 1955 Van Kampen Joined The Institute Of Theoretical Physics At Utrecht University Where He Later Became Full Professor And Professor Emeritus After His Retirement. His Monograph Stochastic Processes In Physics And Chemistry 1981 Is Considered A Classic. In His 2002 Book Waanwetenschap Science Van Kampen Condemned What He Saw As Pseudoscience Even Within The Scientific Community; The Book Met With A Mixed Reaction - Five Scientists Including Vincent Icke Floris Takens And Dennis Dieks Wrote A Commentary On His Book. Nico Van Kampen Was An Uncle Of The Dutch Theoretical Physicist And Nobel Prize Winner Gerard 'T Hooft And He Encouraged 'T Hooft To Study Physics In Utrecht.7 Van Kampen Was A Member Of The Royal Netherlands Academy Of Arts And Sciences Since 1973. Nico Van Kampen Was A Severe Critic Of Non-Orthodox Interpretations Of Quantum Mechanics. Some Of His Views On This Subject Were Published In An Article Entitled The Scandal Of Quantum Mechanics . He Disclosed His Own Approach To Quantum Mechanics In A Paper Entitled Ten Theorems About Quantum Mechanical Measurements. Courtesy Wikipedia. Rijksuniversiteit Te Utrecht paperback

Light Wear. Printed Name "Fokker" At Top Of Front Cover Probably One Of The Author's Own Copies But Last From The Library Of Dutch Physicist Jan Korringa. Adriaan Daniël Fokker 1887 -1972 Was A Dutch Physicist. He Worked In The Fields Of Special Relativity And Statistical Mechanics. Fokker Was Born In Buitenzorg Dutch East Indies Now Bogor Indonesia. He Was A Cousin Of The Aeronautical Engineer Anthony Fokker. Fokker Studied Mining Engineering At The Delft University Of Technology And Physics At The University Of Leiden With Hendrik Lorentz Where He Earned His Doctorate In 1913. He Continued His Studies With Albert Einstein Ernest Rutherford And William Bragg. In His 1913 Thesis He Derived The Fokker-Planck Equation Along With Max Planck. After His Military Service During World War I He Returned To Leiden As Lorentz' And Ehrenfest's Assistant. Fokker Became A Physics Teacher At The Gymnasium Of Delft After 1918 And Was Appointed In 1923 As The First Professor Of Applied Physics At The Technische Hoogeschool Delft Today Delft University Of Technology. In 1928 Fokker Succeeded Hendrik Lorentz As Director Of Research At Teylers Museum In Haarlem. Fokker Made Several Contributions To Special Relativity And Some Less Well-Known Contributions To General Relativity Particularly In The Area Of Geodetic Precession The Phenomena Of Precession Of A Freely Falling Gyroscope In A Gravitational Field.Fokker Began To Study Music Theory During The Second World War When The University Of Leiden Was Closed; Partly This Was Due To A Desire To Convince The Nazis He Would Be Of No Use To The War Effort And Partly It Was A Response To Reading The Work Of Christiaan Huygens On The 31 Equal Temperament. In 1938 Fokker - Along With Dirk Coster And Otto Hahn - Helped Jewish-Born Physicist Lise Meitner Escape From Austria To The Netherlands. "Fokker And Coster Both Knew That University Positions Were Virtually Unavailable For Foreigners. Laboratory Space Was Not A Problem However Either In Groningen Or Haarlem. 'Perhaps We Can Tap Colleagues For Regular Contributions' Coster Suggested. Fokker Set A Goal Of F.20000 Enough To Support Meitner For Five Years And Immediately Began Contacting Colleagues For Advice And Donations." They Were Unsuccessful In Obtaining Funding But Fokker Succeeded In Getting Official Permission For Meitner To Leave Although He Was Unable To Telegraph That To Her Due To Secrecy. She Escaped Barely In Time To Evade Arrest. The Year 1942 Consequently Marked A Turning Point In His Life; After Then He Wrote Many Pieces In 31-Equal Which Are Notable For Using The 7Th Harmonic As A Consonant Interval 31-Equal Has A Much Better Approximation Of The 7Th Harmonic Than The Ubiquitous 12-Equal. He Also Made Notable Contributions To Music Theory Such As The Fokker Periodicity Block. Martinus Nijhoff paperback
