1913rif. 188059Leipzig and Berlin: B. G. Teubner 1913. Generalizing relativity First edition of Einstein's early articulation of general relativity his first paper to describe gravity as the curvature of spacetime containing "virtually all the essential features of his general theory of relativity" Norton p. 253. In 1912 Einstein's old school friend Marcel Grossman 1878-1936 secured him a professorship at ETH Zurich where they had both studied as undergraduates. The two men began a collaboration to provide a firmer mathematical foundation to Einstein's concept of gravity as a geometrical property of time and space. The two sections of the Entwurf outline the resulting theory in full complete with gravitational field equations relating the curvature of spacetime to the distribution of mass and energy within it. Einstein contributed the initial section focussing on physical theories while Grossman added the following section developing the more complex mathematical formulae. Michel Janssen editor of the Einstein Papers Project notes that the Entwurf "was published as a separatum in early 1913 and was reprinted the following year in Zeitschrift für Mathematik und Physik" p. 1. The Zeitschrift reprint includes an added section outlining the famed "Hole" argument. An offprint dated 1914 was published with the journal. Provenance: Edward Vermilye Huntington 1874-1952 the American academic who studied the foundations of mathematics at Harvard for 40 years with his signature on the front wrapper. Octavo. Device to title page formulae in the text. Original light green wrappers printed in black. Light rubbing chipping and creasing to wrappers contents clean: a very good copy indeed. rif. 150644Plaster bust of theoretical physicist Albert Einstein mounted on a wood pedestal base with an incised signature within the plaster. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 8 inches. From the collection of actress LeGrand Mellon 1937-2005 an American performer whose career spans film television and theater. In addition to her acting career Mellon had been involved in creative and cultural work connected to Haiti launching micro-businesses and continuing the work of her late first husband William Larimer Mellon III with Hôpital Albert Schweitzer. In very good condition. Albert Einstein developed the general theory of relativity one of the two pillars of modern physics alongside quantum mechanics. Einstein's work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science. Einstein is best known in popular culture for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2 which has been dubbed "the world's most famous equation". He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his "services to theoretical physics" in particular his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect a pivotal step in the evolution of quantum theory David Bodanis. unknown
1921rif. 009631Paris: Gauthier-Villars 1921 8vo 22.5 cm 16 pp. Uncut in printed wrappers wrappers slightly sunned; ownership entry on the title page. French translation by Maurice Solovine of Einstein's well-known 1920 lecture on the concept of the ether delivered at the University of Leiden. In this brief but influential text Einstein revisits the notion of the ether in light of the general theory of relativity arguing that while the classical mechanical ether must be abandoned the relativistic description of space-time still allows one to speak of a form of 'ether' understood as the physical properties of space itself. A concise and important exposition of Einstein's evolving views on the foundations of relativity.Boni-Russ-Laurence 115.B. Gauthier-Villars paperback
1921rif. 009633Paris: Gauthier-Villars 1921 12mo 19 cm XXII 120 pp. Printed wrappers wrappers slightly stained and frayed; small portions of paper missing from the spine; paper toned inside. Early French edition of Einstein's celebrated popular exposition of the theory of relativity intended to make the fundamental ideas of both the special and the general theory accessible to non-specialists. With a preface by the renowned mathematician Émile Borel who emphasizes the scientific importance of Einstein's work and its profound implications for modern physics. Einstein's text explains the essential concepts of space time motion gravitation and the structure of space-time in clear largely non-technical language presenting the empirical and conceptual foundations of relativity to a broad readership. The French translation was prepared by Maurice Solovine one of Einstein's close early collaborators and an important mediator of his ideas to the French-speaking public. Boni-Russ-Laurence 91.B. Folding green cloth slipcase. 1 1/2 pages on recto and verso of quarto sheet of letterhead for the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists. An invitation written in Einstein's capacity as Chairman of the Trustees of the Committee to Lesser to attend a three day conference in Princeton the following month and asking him to be his special guest at a luncheon on the 17th of November. Einstein writes Lesser "as one who shares with American scientists a sense of the responsibility and urgency with which this great new force has impressed upon our lives ." and notes that one of the chief aims of the conference will be for "the scientists to reach final agreement on our program of education for survival ." Perhaps it was in his capacity as film producer that Lesser was considered a potential contributor beyond simple monetary help. The letter is addressed to Lesser at the Paramount Building 1501 Broadway NYC. Lesser 1890-1980 was a successful film producer a career that spanned the silent era up through such productions as THUNDER OVER MEXICO 1939 and OUR TOWN 1940 to the long string of post 1943 Tarzan films when he once again reacquired the rights after having produced the Buster Crabbe serial of 1933. He received the 1960 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. unknown

1944rif. 182569London: The Jewish Agency for Palestine 1944. First separate edition of Einstein's appeal for Zionism. Einstein was one of the most prominent international supports of Zionism. He argues Palestine is the only place historically spiritually and culturally tied to the Jewish people. Whereas the Arabs with many homelands the Jews have nowhere else to go. Their claims are rooted not in conquest or nationalism but in justice and survival. The article was originally published in the Princeton Herald earlier that year. This publication prints the article alongside other speeches and letters by Einstein extracted from his 1930 About Zionism. Octavo original cloth with gilt titles to the spine top edge gilt frontispiece of Einstein by Yousuf Karsh. Edited by Paul Arthur Schilpp. In near fine condition. Written by the man considered the "Person of the Century" by Time magazine this is not a glimpse into Einstein's personal life but an extension and elaboration into his thinking on science. Two of the great theories of the physical world were created in the early 20th century: the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Einstein created the theory of relativity and was also one of the founders of quantum theory. Here Einstein describes the failure of classical mechanics and the rise of the electromagnetic field the theory of relativity and of the quanta. "The greatest physicist of the 20th century" PMM 408.
